Having worked in a few jobs on the security/law enfrocement side of things it's amazing how many **** boxes carry weapons of some sort.. whether its a screw driver, a knife, a lump of wood, a six inch nail, and there are some utter drop kicks running around with guns as you can see in Sydney lately and no doubt elsewhere. These people don't care if they get caught carrying weapons, because they're bottom feeders.

I carry a small folding pocket knife with a blade about 1" in length that I've had for years, it's handy for all sorts of things but it's an offence for me to carry it in public, I care because being charged could impact my lifestyle in a big way, recreationally and work opportunities as well.

Sure, the odds of being robbed are reasonably slim, and the Police do what they can but the only one that can protect yourself if SHTF is yourself. How many of us sleep with a weapon in the bedroom, or have one by the front door? An old axe handle, a baseball bat, a cricket bat if you're ocker.. same thing. It's preparing for a situation that may and hopefulyl will never happen. But it might.

As I said I'd CCW in a heartbeat, I've been deemed responsible by the Government in the past to carry a firearm at work for self defence, and I've jumped through dozens of hoops regarding training, licencing, background checks and psychological profiling to some extent. But by the same token, just because you've got a clean criminal record doesn't mean you should be able to own a gun, or guns, or CCW. You maybe just never got caught, who knows, and thats teh only thing that makes me nervous about CCW - but some criminals already do.

Once again typing this is hard at work :( Stop calling me people!

They also talk like buying a handgun and being aware of their surrounding makes you a one man swat team.

The people on that forum are the exact people who should never have been allowed firearms, let alone allowed to carry concealed ones in the first place. They're quick to panic and their first reaction is to reach for their firearm.

Yeah, the worst people to have a guns are the ones who are untrained to deal with situations.

well it sure doesn't... do you have any idea what the stats on American gun related violence look like?

while in the back of my mind I think it would be useful to have an AK in the closet just in case we got invaded Red Dawn-style day to day the idea is ludicrous. You just have the compounding effect of paranoid delusional's enabling each other.

Not as high as vehicle related incidents.

There are a lot of things that are statistically more dangerous than firearms in society, and if you care to compare the use of a knife in violent crime to that of a firearm, it speaks for itself. Ban knives.

I do support gun control to an extent, but some of the restrictions are utterly moronic. For example I can buy a lever action shotgun, or a pump action rifle, but not a pump action shotgun and there is no genuine reason for that. It was simple something thrown into the 1996 knee jerk firearms legislation because bad guys in movies use them.

Not to mention that as a licenced firearms owner, I actually need to pay a fee and submit a form to the Firearms Registry, to get a Permit to Acquire, before I can pick up a gun. It's insane, because they never refuse them, it's pure red tape and money making.

There is no reason I shouldn't be able to walk into a gun store, give them the money and walk out with my damn gun and have the dealer submit paperwork to the FAR notifying them of my purchase.. happy to suport a mandatory waiting period which does actually exist for your first firearm but after that it seems pointless.

As far as I am concerned, Australia's gun control laws aren't restrictive enough, and further severe restriction would get my vote. A gun does not make a sport, no matter how people may try to defend it.

And as far as Americas gun control laws go.. let the weekly toll of bullet ridden corpses speak for themselves.

I disagree with you pretty strongly, but you're entitled to your opinion. You may be shocked to know though that I've been hunting and target shooting my entire life, and haven't killed anyone! Shock horror

It's got nothing to do with guns turning people into killers, it's about restricting the access to the retards out there.

And I disagree with you very strongly, simple as that. Go justify your weapon while looking into the eyes of someone with severe gunshots wounds, or someone traumatized by being confronted at gun point. Just cause you haven't harmed someone from it, doesn't justify the permission of them in society. I could drive at 200kph on the road and not kill someone, that doesn't jusify allowing the driving at those speeds.

There is no place for civilian weapons, and I will never deem it a "sport". You will never convince me otherwise.

You're entitled to.. I can justify my hobby and my sport easily - despite gun crime which compared to other crime is has far less impact.

Lets talk about knives, since you've got a fixation on firearms. Lets not get into what Frued said about that! Kidding, btw.. knives are used in crime for more often, assaults with knives or weapons other than a firearm are significantly higher than gun crime in Australia. Do you support the banning and restriction of knives? Probably not.

Or as others have said, vehicles. Vehicles kill, injure and main more people every year than guns do in ten. Lets ban those!

You may have a little trouble arguing your point when guns cannot be used for transport on a daily basis or used for cooking or general household use :P
