Day Z standalone game officially announced

That’s right, this is actually happening - DayZ will be developed as a standalone game, with me as project lead, by Bohemia Interactive. This is the fairy-tale outcome for a mod that many would have said impossible four months ago.

Development and updates of the mod will continue in parallel with the development of the game, so anyone who is playing the mod now will be able to continue to do so. The project will follow the Minecraft development model; fast iterations with the community alpha available for a heavily discounted price.

I did see this this morning, and will definitely be looking forward to updates as the project kicks off.

The thing which surprised me (well not really surprising in hindsight) was that Rocket will be working for BI instead of as his own studio. I guess it is due to the game being a mod, and it being far easier to work for the guys who make the base software.

He's made BI a few dollars.

I might actually buy the game, if it's Steamworks.

Fantastic, will be purchasing the Alpha for sure. Liking how they are going with a similar model that Minecraft used.

If it gets rid of the kids from Arma 2, this is good news

Didn't Rocket already work for Bohemia? I'm pretty sure he always was one of the devs for Arma 2.

I just hope they pull the game far enough away from the open nature of the Arma engines, get some stability in and lock the hacks out!

How many people bought Arma 2 for Day Z and then actually tried playing Arma 2 for more than 5 minutes?

I can't stand the Arma engine. It feels like driving a human sized mech.

But throw in the ability to stalk humans and ruin their day with a neatly placed sniper round, then suddenly I can put up with the engine.

He was an Arma 2 dev that made dayz in his spare time and then they asked him to do it at work, I guess it might have been a legal shitstorm if he had wanted to take the idea standalone without them. TBH I find it amazing how successful it has been considering how little he changed things, aside from like 4 zombie animations, gear spawns and the Hive he's really not done all that much (inc screaming at me).

Looking at other successful mods in the past they've always done a BIG overhaul of the models/mechanics where as most of Dayz development so far has been bug fixes for the engine and adjusting zombie behavior.

Why bother fixing bugs? Just call it an Alpha...
