It's not quite that easy when you're literally in the middle of nowhere with no noticeable landmarks and when you spawn it comes up saying "wilderness" as your location.

Oh I'm sure I could manage to get around, but hitting individual locations that are specific in unending forrests is difficult and then I'd never make it back to exactly where we logged out, as there are no landmarks near us.

Hahah, yeah if I had a compass I'd be right, hopefully we'll pick one up for me soon.

It's Bill the Butcher from the Gangs of New York movie, I quite liked his character, and it wasn't long ago that I was thinking "I wish I could grow a moustache like that, Wyld can, ****". Maybe this can be my small tribute to all that is Wyld..? Haha.

yeah he was a fantastic character out of a thoroughly enjoyable movie. have you seen "there will be blood"... he is a great actor.

so whats every ones "must have gun". Ive used maybe four weapons...and im sure ARMA has a few in its files...

my most enjoyable was the crossbow, but i only had the one bolt.

No I haven't seen that actually, I'll keep an eye out if I remember.

As for my favourite gun(s) in DayZ, for sidearm it's the Colt 1911, and then AKM/Enfield/AK74SU .. but I haven't used many. I want to get my hands on an M249 >.>

A good check for weapons is this list here -

http://dayzwiki.com/wiki/index.php?titl ... ison_Table

Personally, I go by the following weapons -

Side arm: M1911. Plentiful ammunition, single shot drop to kill a zombie wherever you hit them, and if you find .45ACP rounds, you can 'convert' them to a full 7 round M1911 mag, giving you an extra bullet. It also reloads faster than the other one shot kill sidearm, the revolver, and is also a touch quieter, making it the superior weapon.

Otherwise, the G17. Use it carefully - one shot to the head or nothing at all - and it has a lot of ammunition which can be used in an MP5 if you are desperate, and it has a flashlight, which at night, can be extremely useful. But always put it aside for a M1911.

The M9SD would be a handy gun to have. But having found only a single magazine here and there for it, forget it - its not enough rounds, and the sidearm should be your primary zombie killing weapon, because your main weapon is there for players.

For a main weapon, I go with what I can find, usually! But I've had good luck with the AKM, the M1014, and currently, the M16A2. Admittedly, your goal weapon should -always- be a sniper rifle. The DMR in particular has good ammunition, and is a lethal, lethal killer. Get yourself a sniper rifle for players, any sniper rifle really, and play careful, and play safe. The sniper should always hang right back when its time for combat.

Admittedly, after realising I was becoming one of the douchebags perpetuating the cycle of player killing - after firing without warning on a group of players, who shot me immediately for my perfidious nature - I've adjusted my thinking somewhat. I now, no matter what the cost to me, will always warn a player and give them a chance before firing. I will probably get shot for it, many, many times - but I'm not going to be one of 'those guys' any more. A sniper rifle will tend to make you one of 'those guys', sadly. So be careful you don't become addicted to its deadly power.

My AK74SU has a red dot on it, but I'm not overly impressed with it, I'd much prefer to pick up something like an SLR or M14, or any of the scoped sniper rifles. My 1911 is more than enough for Zombies, it's only other players I'm concerned about.

If your going to alt tab, it's best if you either open your gear menu or go to map before you alt tab. That will prevent your weapon going off at all.

And now on a more personel note: AAAWWWWWW YEEEAAAAHHHHHH! I'm now the proud owner of a DMR with 200rnds and an M249 with 383 rnds (It'd be 400rnds if I hadn't gotten a bit carried away with a couple of Zac). It was a hellish start to my current 6 day character, but so worth hanging in for.

Day1: Woke up at late sunset on the beach and made my way to the nearest town. I'm barely 50 mtrs in when the first Zac spots me. I take off in a cloud of dust and the battle cry of nerds everywhere "I want my Muuum". 30 seconds later I look behind me (by this time I've lost count of all the things I shouldn't have done) to see a bakers dozen of Zac howling and slavering after me.
With all the nearby buildings only having 1 way in and out, I head straight for the nearby docks and rapidly come to the conclusion that this was a dumb idea.
In desperation I jump from the dock and start swimming. A short while later I make it to the opposite shore minus all my gear, but at least I lost the Justin Bieber fan club.

With half the Zac population dog paddling in the bay I start making my way back into town. I manage to find an axe in some-ones toilet and do my best not to think about why there was an axe in some-ones toilet.

A few minutes later I see movement nearby and start to pull back, when I notice this shape has a backpack. I keep watching until I'm reasonably sure he's unarmed. I'm desperate and come to a fateful decision. As I close on him my heart starts pounding, my hands begin to tremble, my eyes feel like they're going to bulge out their sockets. I'm stalking a fellow human in a world populated by the dead. I'm desperate, I'm not a bad man, I'm not . He's getting set to cross a road, I can't risk losing him or being spotted myself crossing the road behind him. It's now or never.
I rush at him with my axe held high and start hacking. He turns around at the first blow, I was right, he's unarmed. I get two more blows in before he tries to run, and makes it about 20 feet before I bring him down and finish the job. He dies without a sound.

As I search his body and backpack it becomes obvious that he must have just awoken on the beach as well, nothing but the basic kit. I feel like a ****, but I'm alive and that's what matters. I make a quick sweep of the town but find nothing of significance, no food, no weapons, nada. The axe is better than nothing but every second or third Zac gets in a hit and I leave town minus roughly 2500 blood. I head Nth.

It's full dark by the time I reach the next town. It started fairly well, bandages, ammo, knife, Makarov with 1 mag. Not much, but better than a kick in the head.
I get half way into town when things go downhill. A Zac spots me and gives chase, by the time I make it to a building there's three. The Mak is down to 4 rnds by the time I'm done. I head out the opposite door, right into the arms of a Zac attracted by the shooting. Just my luck to run into the worlds only ninja zombie. Zac gets in a hell of a blow and I start pumping out blood and bullets. Zac drops, Mak is down to 1 bullet, I'm down to 8.8k blood and dropping. Sure enough the Bieber fans have found me again. Christ, all I said was "He's an over-rated nobody".

I dash into the building across the street, in the vain hope there would be Mak ammo. One way in, one way out. ****! I drop the first with a headshot and that's it for Mak. Out comes the axe and I do the only thing I can do, I wade in. I almost make it out, almost. That last bastich Zac just had to go and break my leg.
I look through my gear and sure enough, no morphine. Still in the middle of a hostile town, empty gun, 4.8k blood, no food, broken leg, no morphine. I roll over on my back, flip the bird at the sky and tell god to go do something pornographic. It proceeds to start raining.

With nothing else to do I start crawling. 20 mins later I'm on the edge of town. 25 mins after that I'm approaching a deer stand and my first bit of good luck, an AKM and 2 mags. Then came the best bit of good luck. I make contact with another player over TS. 76, and he just happens to have a land rover. We meet, we move on. Soon we meet another player. Other player has morphine and a blood bag. Woot!

We're travelling along the coast towards Cherno, I decide I've had enough for one day. I get 76 to drop me off and I head into the trees, find a nice cumfy bush to sleep under and disconnect. The most up and down day I've ever had on DayZ.

Days 2 through 4 were fairly uneventful. Found an alice pack, found some matches, occasionally heard gunfire in the distance, saw a player get violently disassembled by half a dozen Zac. Just another day post apocalypse.

Day 5: Found a crashed chopper. Neutralised the surrounding Zac and searched the chopper. 1 DMR and 10 mags later and I'm legging it out of there before god realises somethings gone my way. Later I find a revolver and ammo to replace my Mak. I start to worry, things aren't meant to go this well. Are they?

Day 6: Another server. Barely a km from the crash site on the other server, I find another crashed chopper. I'm at full health, I have 8 steaks, 6 cans of food, 2 boxes of pain killers and several bandages, but only one morphine. I move in, neutralise the local Bieber fans and start looking around. I'm almost ready to give up, there's nothing here but some truly disturbing fan mail, when I stumble upon a dream made manifest. An M249 with 2 mags. I dump some unessential gear like food to make room for the new love of my life and trot out of there with a happy grin on my face.
I now wander the wastelands with 600rnds of pure kick arse. All I need now is some NVG and a ghillie suit and I'm going looking for God. It's coming up on pay back time.

I lost my ~2 week old survivor (spawned when the marakov was part of the base kit) last night after a great solo run, followed by an epic marathon out of the debug wilderness (90 mins running southeast across two evenings!), and then some more fun.

2 days ago I made it out of the debug forest with my kit: Alice pack, M16/M203 & G17, 8 steaks, 3 water bottles, some softdrink, the basic survival gear (knife, hatchet, compass, matches) and binocs. Once I got out and back into the normal playing area, I stumbled across the motherload at Skalka (far north-west corner of map)! There would have been about 8 or 10 tents stuffed with goodies, so I swapped my M16/M203 for the CCO version, topped up on a few things out of their stash, and legged it out of there before anyone returned, ran to a remote bit of forest and logged out for the evening.

Last night, logged back in, snuck around and raided the north-west airfield, found a bike, poked around in Grisihno, then hit up the Devils Castle, and continued moving eastwards. Just shy of Gvozdno, after sneaking past some Z's, I get spotted by a glitched zombie (who just decided to pop out of the middle of an un-enterable house!), instantly have my leg broken, and run out of ammo trying to kill the townfull of zombies who come running for dinner.

Respawned and had absolutely no luck getting anywhere, two deaths without even finding something to defend myself with, and then another death after about 20 mins, finding a Enfield rifle, popping about 35 Z's, then get shot & broken leg from someone nearby :(. No morphine, not any real decent gear, and 4 rounds left in the Enfield, I figured I may as well call it a day, and had a last stand with the Enfield, popped a few zombies with the remaining rounds and let the rest come for me.

I wouldn't mind meeting up with someone else to help out and join forces. Its a hell of a lot harder to get a foothold without a starting weapon, and better zombie spotting AI.

The aksu scope is **** even when it works properly, 99% of the time i have to wait 2 seconds after shouldering it before the chevron appears rather than just a white square.

Best all round gun in the game atm IMO, low recoil, excellent accuracy and you can just feed it stanag if you can't find any boxes, it's also stupidly lethal at long range when you're prone. I'm a little afraid to log in atm because I know my L85 is going to be gone and im worried something will happen to the SAW in my backpack rofl.

Logged in earlier to the ANZ servers no issues today. Go nuts.

Coincidentally, I've had the longest character life (3 days) so far. This is past-tense me speaking though. Current tense me is very very sour about crushing himself between an opening gate and a pillar at Green Mountain Radio Tower. AKM with a full inventory of ammo. So mad. I've also given up trying to coop with my brother. Breaks legs, rage quits.

I haven't had that happen with the AK74SU at all actually, the green sight is always there straight away?

As for the M249, amazing little beast of a machine, just need to raid a few crashed helicopters if I can find them :D Seen a few boxes of ammo, but no actual gun in itself. It is true that heli crash sites are the only place they spawn?
