Just deleted my DayZ install and re-did it through SixLauncher, seems OK now. I finally also scored an easy gun and loot in Pav. Finally getting the hang of this I think... 30 lives later.
The better guns are almost always found inland but the odd 1 or 2 can be found in Cherno or Elektro.
While everyone seems to want to find the more elusive guns they are not integral to your survival in the game.
The M1911 will take out zeds in one hit no matter if it's a headshot or a shot in the big toe.
Silenced weapons are by far the most useful as they won't attract the horde if you need to take out 1 zed who may be wandering to close.
The sniper rifles are for player killers plain and simple, whilst you could sit back and ping docile zeds from 1000m most people won't and trying to shoot and aggro'd zed from beyond 10m would be a challenge.
That being said it doesn't mean the rifles can't be used to your benefit if you're not a bandit.
The other night when I came across not only the DMR but also the M107 and hiked my way back to the coast, I was reading chat log about people getting shot in cherno, so I set up camp about 500m from the outskirt of town and started scanning.
It wasn't long before some shooting lead me to find a bandit sniper shooting from one of the silo structures, made a guess at the range, zeroed the M107 and fired.
The noise the M107 makes is massive and I expected every zed to come running but thankfully none did and for the rest of the night I became an Anti-Bandit taking out players seeking elevated positions for camping.
With my character still in play last night there was no chatter about snipers and only requests for help.
So I slung the rifles and spent the night travelling the coast dispensing morphine, blood and cooked food, and this really shows the depth this game has as 1 night you can be gunning away and the next night not firing a shot even though I stumbled across 2 people is the fading light.
