Minimise to desktop crash

Unread postby Sathias » 13 Jun 12, 9:47 pm

Of late I have not been able to get through a round as part way through the game will freeze for a second or two, then minimise back to desktop with the game still running. At that point the game is unresponsive and I have to terminate the process. Has anyone run into this bug and did you manage to fix it?

I used to get it all the time.
My solution might not be applicable to you tho

I have sli 580's un-overclocked but until i beefed the vcore up a little from 1.013v to 1.05v i used to crash alot screen would go black i'd alt tab to the desktop but i could still hear the game running.
I had a similar problem with crysis 2

I had read a thread on the BF3 site with someone saying something similar about their 570, which is the card I have. I didn't want to go ahead and mess around with voltages until I had some confirmation so thanks for that, might give it a go.

No problem mate, i was bashing my head against the wall till i remembered my crysis 2 problem.
I went thru everything un overclocking my cpu and everything now after upping the vcore im running 4.2ghz on my i7 again with no problems

The temps on my cards didn't change much either and i now just run 1.05v permanently have been for the last 3 months with no problems

Hope it fixes it for you, i only just got back into BF3 today since the new dlc is out and diablo is becoming a chore

Same thing happens to me (570) but it only happens once in a while (yesterday it did it twice, today once), my card has a stable clock (8 hour stress testing) and the voltage is slightly higher than it needs to be.

Haven't updated to the latest drivers though, you on the latest 301.42 or 296.10?

I still get the odd one too but i can count the amount of times on one hand since i upped vcore.
Before that 1 out of every 2 matches would crash.

Going sideways, what is your PSU rated at? Could also be the videocard driver resetting due to a power load issue.

I'm using the 301.42 ones.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I appreciate it. I'll try the voltage fix tomorrow and see how it goes.

next time it does it i'd leave it and come back in a half hour and see if anthing changes. if it does manage to crash have a look in the event viewer and see if there are any appcrash reports.

come to think of it you could have look in there even when the game minimises to see if something software related is causing it

There isn't a whole heap in the Event Viewer, but that could be because I killed the process once I couldn't restore it. Next time I will leave it go for a while instead.

However I realised I'm on the 301.24 beta drivers, going to upgrade to 301.42 and see how that goes.

What program do people use to change voltages? I downloaded MSI Afterburner (I read it worked with other brands as well) but the voltage setting was disabled.

Just for comparison...

I run a 570 at stock - the only problem I encounter with BF3 is Aero dropping me back to windowed mode to complain that it can't run while BF3 is... (I know there's a fix to auto-kill aero when BF3 starts but it just doesn't bother me enough)

The only time I ever have any other problems they all have immediate explanations - ie server crash, haven't stopped downloading "art" films, that sort of thing.

I use msi afterburner for voltage changes its an older version tho 2.1
I just had to tick 2 boxes on the settings screen
Unlock voltage control
Unlock voltage monitoring

Well I think the voltage increase fixed it, just got through two rounds without a crash. It was on .988 and I upped it to 1.

I was having a similar problem last year. I got a 580 when BF3 came out, the game would minimize and become unresponsive (also happened in some other games too). Checked event viewer, had a display driver stopped responding issue. Checked around for ages and eventually settled on upping the voltage with MSI afterburner. No more crashes to this day.

+1 for me also, this has been a common problem with BF3 since day 1.
