I completely missed Bf1942, which will forever make me sad - even if I were to buy it now I still wouldn't be able to play it because of how dated it is. Gah, why was I stuck on the worlds slowest internet back then :(

Demo 1942 came out August 2002 - next weekend there was a LAN - by the end of the first day nearly 200 people were playing it... (except for six diehards playing CS)

There are still servers running demo Wake Island... sometimes with people in them.

yeah BF1942 was my second ever online multiplayer game (first was Day of Defeat played about 30 mins before BF1942). From then on I was hooked - bought a new PC and used to play on dial up...yep, dial up (back in '02). Jumped onto DC when that came out...was SOOOO much fun especially El Alamein. Always remembered the big C130 gunship.

If you jumped into '42 now...the first thing you'll notice is how far we've come in terms of graphics etc. In old '42 (and BF2 I think), even a stone could damage your tank! lol.

Going from demo to the real 1942 you notice the major differences in the game play.

This video shows how DICE has progressed onto the consoles. It was done starting with BF2 and so on. The game play has taken a swing in a different direction. But i do like the direction it's gone. Team-play is still key IMO. When your on a **** team in BF3 you sure as hell know it.

Yep :( It's just one of those.. once it's gone, it's gone moments :/ the first BF game I had had a decent enough connection to play was BF2 but I think the one I've spent the most time in was BF2142 easily, I seriously loved that game and spent hours in hectic Titan battles enjoying the close combat.. loved the Assault rifle grenade that you could fire into the vents inside.

Does anyone know if there is still a BF2142 community at all? I'd rebuy it if there were still players.

Yeah same, I have them all plus the expansions for the games right through from 1942 to BF2, I have the current BF3, I don't have all the addons for BF3 though and all of them only for the PC. ;)

I still cant see myself ever playing another game like BF2 for 5000+ hours ever again that was just CRAZY. :dizzy:
