New Phone Time (Need Advice)

Unread postby 10dollars » 3 Jun 12, 11:28 pm

Hi folks,
So right now I have a HTC Desire HD. Not NextG compatible.
I'm currently looking for a new phone.
The only phone I find worth it would be the Samsung Galaxy S2 4G version...

I'm not up-to-date with phones and all, so I was wanting some suggestions.
Seeing as Telstra is turning off their 3G towers (ending their deal with Voda/Hutchinson) I need a NextG phone.

I'm not sure what Telstra is going to do with their NextG towers in the next 24 months, so perhaps a 4G phone would be the way to go.

Any suggestions?

Other possibilities:
Samsung Galaxy Nexus
Samsung Galaxy S3
HTC One XL - though no removable battery or SD Card is a big turn off. Plus it hasn't got AMOLED.

I'm looking for an Android phone only. Any manufacturer. I'm currently locked in on a Telstra BYO phone. Not looking at moving. Vodafone was before, they are bad.

Thanks in advance. :)

to be honest there aren't really any secret gems out there when it comes to phones.

You've got S2 vs Galaxy Nexus (personally I think I'd lean slightly towards the Nexus but both great phones) or you've got the S3 if you're prepared to pay >$700 for a phone and gadget supremacy.

I love my HTC One X. So I'd suggest the XL.

If I were you, I would go for Samsung Galaxy Nexus; priced fairly with fair specs. Galaxy S3 seems to be a luxury, so if you are simply looking for a phone you could use daily, having a phone with 1.2 GHz dual-core processor isn't bad at all.

I don't think the NextG network is going anywhere any time soon.

Going on that, I'd go with a Galaxy (Nexus or S3) or a One X (which isn't being offered on Telstra but works on the same frequency as NextG).

As per the first part of my post, I don't think the NextG network is going anywhere so I based my recommendations on that.

Got a mate with a 4G phone who has raved about the speeds he is getting WHEN he can connect to it here in Adelaide, so I'm kinda wondering if I should have waited for the XL

I was concerned about that too 10dollars. But it is possible to simulate a battery pull if need be. And given Dropbox and whatnot, the lack of SD card hasn't concerned me yet. Altho I am still yet to root or anything, so not sure how that would affect things.

Welp, I went and got the S2 4G. Given the price difference between that, the XL, and the S3...

As I run a business, I need to have quite a bit of space on my phone (trust me... I need it, not just apps). I also have a spare battery for when I am out and about, which is why I need to be able to remove the battery.

Thanks all for the suggestions. It wasn't an easy decision. I would have liked to have got the XL, but as above....

Hey just thought i'd put in here instead of opening new thread...

I shattered the hell out of the screen on my htc desire a week back and the SGS3 dropped the day after, so am looking to upgrade due to the htc screen, plus it was dying and i really dont want to revive it too much...

so whats the best between the SGS3 and the HTX one X ? or is there a better alternative?

cheers guys, will keep reading in the mean time...

They're basically neck and nexk, save for the fact the SGS3 isn't 4G.
The One X has a bigger(?) battery. They're both quad core phones.
It also comes with **** beats audio (lol). I think the screen is LCD (I could be wrong), whereas the SGS3 is AMOLED.

The main difference is the One X doesn't have any SD slot, and wont allow you to remove the battery.

These are very useful - maybe not quite as convenient as a second battery - but they can be charged separately - ie I'm guessing you can only charge your second battery while its in the phone...

I have two different versions/sizes of the Energizer - recharge/power the phone and the Wifi Modem (without leeching laptop power)... The convenience factor is pretty high - but the couple of times I've REALLY needed them have made them worthwhile

In the Adelaide CBD, I get 30Mb/s down and 9Mb/s up on my 4G Galaxy S2.
