New Mobile Time - which droid?

Unread postby DeusIgnis » 24 Mar 12, 3:58 pm

After a very long two years my vodafone contract is finally up, over their lack of reception and whatnot I shall be jumping ship to telstra, and grabbing a new phone in the process.

Currently I have a HTC Desire HD, best thing about it that I have found is it's durability (you can open stubbies with it!). Net can be slow on it, but not sure if that is phone or vodafone related. Love android, HTC sense I like, but not attached to it.

so looking at the available options on Telstra I am thinking

HTC Velocity 4G

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

With ICS on the Nexus and Coming to/Already on the Velocity I guess it comes down to specs. I have played around on the original galaxy and the S II, both obviously only with gingerbread or earlier, but the big standout was how flimsy they feel. I used to have a case for my Desire HD, but have since stopped using it as it made the already bulky phone bulkier and it is tough enough on its own.

At the moment I am swinging towards the HTC after a bit of reading.

So yeah, just wondering if anyone out their had any experience with either phone and good vs bad.

Cheers guys

Velocity 4G isn't supposed to be that good and the Nexus is a tad glitchy and should have a custom ROM put on it..

I would wait for the Galaxy S III dude.. if your REALLY wanting a good Droid go with the HTC One X/XL.

I agree, if you're keen on HTC then get the HTC One X. And HTC does have good build quality. Phone flies, has a fantastic screen to look at, etc (I'm sure you can read about it). Sense 4 on ICS is supposed to be a cut down, lighter (e.g. less bloat hopefully), smoother experience than Sense on Gingerbread.

If you can wait or want to try something different, the SGS3 is the way to go. Both phones will be a lot faster than the Nexus as is, but the Nexus is still a very good phone.

Oh, and I can almost definitely attribute the slow 'net to Vodafone rather than the Desire HD ;)

Cheers for the replies guys, I am in no huge rush, it is just that my contract is up. I definitely will be getting a phone on a plan, not planning on shelling out 600+ on a unlocked phone.

So that does limit my options to well, telstra plans, unless you guys know of anyone else with better coverage and speeds... (in perth)

Well it seems as if Telstra will have the Galaxy SIII ready to roll in the very near future

http://smarthouse.com.au/Phones/Mobile/D7K5M8P6

And it seems they will have the HTC One aswell

http://www.telstra.com.au/eoi/keep-info ... 4537792113

Aside from the X having 32gb and the XL 16gb memory, and the XL having "LTE:
ATT: B4/B17
Asia/AUS: 1800/2600 MHz" (i have no idea what that is)

are their any differences between them?

EDIT:
Ok, I have educated myself.
the X has twice the memory and quad core processor (to the XLs dual) and the XL sacrifices this to provide 4g network capabilities. So it looks like Telstra will pickup the XL and not the L, to capitalise on it's 4g network.

For me though, 4g is not a big thing, as my phone is far from being my primary device and I am not sure how good 4g coverage is in perth anywho, since I no longer work or live near the CBD (well, ~10km as the crow flys) it does not hold that much attraction and the quad core and memory sound much sexier.

The Galaxy SIII I have not really read up on, but damn it looks sexy.

The XL is actually still a quick phone, it benchmarks better than the X in most cases.

I would be waiting it out, the downside to Telstra 4G is that it's not very widely available yet and it's not cheap. Have you looked at Optus in your area? They offer better plans for your $ and they seem to roll out updates for Android faster than Telstra.

4G is a joke at the minute anyway. Only useful if you live within 5km of the city centre in a capitals apparently. I considered the Velocity, but few too many things concerned me. So now I'm looking at the One X, through Optus.

I'm also looking at the One X. Don't really want to wait to go to the SIII.

In saying that, it's not like my Galaxy Nexus won't tide me over until then :<

Went into the optus store yesterday to ask about it, they are as usless as **** on a bull.

I am like "I was on the optus website 20 minutes ago, it says you ARE getting the HTC One X"

She says "well, i cannot confirm or deny that we are getting it at this point" and something about being in a meeting the previous day in which it was not mentioned.

IT IS ON YOUR WEBSITE. IF I ORDER ONE ON YOUR WEBSITE I WILL RECEIVE IT ON THE 2nd - 4th OF APRIL.

but I would prefer to do it in person, and I want to know when you will get the phone in store and possibly reserve one or somesuch.

She then went on to explain that some phones are only offered online, but for a phone like the One X, that makes no sense. Then went on to tell me that I am better off getting a different phone rather then getting one through the Optus website as apparently they always have complaints about it...

Telstra was useless aswell regarding the XL...

I wanted to get one in store so I didn't have to have a 24 month contact and was met with the same kinda of uninformed answers! I gave THEM information, and from that they pieced together more info for me. :P For what its worth, if you got it on the $59 cap with 12 month contract, looking at a $27 per month handset fee. The dude I spoke to thought there MIGHT be some sort of discount tho, tell me that for the iPhone 4, the handset fee was $30 per month, but they give you a $20 per month discount so its only $10.

If you want something now: Samsung Galaxy S II 4G.

Both Optus and Telstra use different frequencies for their 4G network though.
i5 2500K @ 4GHz. Gigabyte Z68X GA-UD4-B3. Corsair 1600 DDR3 16GB RAM. Crucial m4 256GB. MSI GTX 680 Lightning II. ASUS Xonar Essence ST.
