Rooting a Desire HD

Unread postby 10dollars » 10 Feb 12, 3:33 pm

Hey folks,
So my contract is up with Vodafone, and I want to get rid of the bloatware.
I've Googled for a bit but they all have guides with applying a custom ROM.
I don't want a custom ROM, I just want the standard Android with HTC Sense or whatever. I just want to remove all Vodafone apps, and some other included ones - along with the Vodafone splash screen when it boots up.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for doing this?

Thanks in advance :-)

I have a DHD and rooted it a while back.

I used the Advanced ACE Hack Kit, which is a one click process.

Good luck. I recommend the MIUI or an ICS rom once you have rooted it.

Generally you can go up to the step where you flash a custom ROM via recovery (installing a custom recovery such as ClockWorkMod is part of the rooting process) and just not flash a new ROM, but instead flash Superuser and be done with it.

I'm not sure about the details of flashing the DHD but your phone may be factory wiped as part of the process, but it might be possible to keep everything as is and have Superuser installed using a one click method.

To clarify, 'rooting' is just allowing access to the phones internal memory (the root partition) and the only difference between a rooted phone and non-rooted phone is a custom recovery and the presence of Superuser. Superuser is an app which controls root access for other apps, so if you can get it on your phone, you can go ahead and install stuff like Titanium to remove the bloatware.

Sorry if I'm necro-ing and if you've already sorted this, but with my Desire HD I used the hack kit Hell Boy mentioned to root it, then installed the RCMix3D Runny custom rom. Gingerbread 2.3.5, and HTC sens 3.5. Development has stopped now, at least in the immediate future, but its a nice little rom and gets rid of the Vodafone stuff.

That's the tool I used to root mine as well. Then upload the ROM to the phone, reboot into the bootloader screen and select the ROM to install. But Artful-dodgeR is right, read read read or you'll end up with a brick! :P

Make sure to clear all the caches if you are going to a different version of android. ie Gingerbread --> ICS.

You can end up with a lot of force closes otherwise.

And make sure to backup the current rom as an image in ROM manager and put it on your computer in case you need to revert.

On an unrelated note, when the GSIII comes out, im so buying it :P
