Muted sound in Youtube and other flash video apps

Unread postby v4moose » 4 Aug 12, 5:20 pm

So i just noticed that in my regular browser - chrome - that youtube has suddenly decided *not* to play sound... video works perfectly but no matter how much i play with the volume slider I can't get any ear pleasure.

Any ideas? Things i've tried:

checked firefox - nothing but a black box where the video should be
internet explorer - works fine (but f*ck that)
reinstalling flash - not possible on chrome
reinstall chome - didn't fix
checked my speakers are default device in sound options
checked whether chrome has a slider in the windows sound mixer (nope)
full adware and virus scan - noting detected

appreciate any help. cheers :D

Running Adblock? (If so whitelist youtube or stop running and see if things change)

(note no idea if that is the blocker, but it seems to be for me on various sites lately)

Windows 7? While playing a flash video, click on your speaker icon on the system tray, make sure "Adobe Flash Player" isn't muted or had it's volume reduced. If not Windows 7, then no idea.

This may be a nooby thing to ask, but have you restarted your PC? I remember having a similar problem and it fixed itself when I turned on the PC the next day.

The problem is related to 5.1 and 7.1, go back to stereo and it works fine, I was getting very annoyed about the same thing :P

and SaNE is the winner :D

I wonder why this happened all of a sudden - I can't think of anything that's changed on my system since yesterday.

Thanks for the suggestions also Clon and Matty - I had indeed tried both of those... so now i must leave my speakers on 2ch and change to 5.1ch for gaming... urgh :/

Chrome updated and brought along a flash problem a couple of days ago.

They are working on a fix;
Google Chrome Forum wrote:We've uncovered the nature of the problem, and are working on a fix. This issue should affect only a subset of people that have 5.1 and 7.1 audio support enabled. As a temporary workaround, you can enable 2.1 stereo sound in the Windows audio settings and sound should be restored.

***At this point in time, please DO NOT post updates to http://crbug.com/139953 unless the stereo workaround does not resolve your issue. Otherwise you'll prevent us from determining if additional fixes are needed.***

....but but but, SaNE posts in the 'ban the person above you' thread, so doesn't that void his post? :x
