No video output after Windows logo

Unread postby Ninja Catfish » 31 May 12, 1:34 am

So I got my U2711 monitor today, it's fantastic. Windows doesn't seem to like it however.
It works fine hooked up via DisplayPort to my MacBook, and seems to work fine for Windows occasionally, but more often than not, when I boot the PC, I'll see POST, the Windows logo, and then nothing. Monitor says my GPU isn't outputting any image and it goes into power save mode.

I removed and reinstalled the GPU driver, no fix.
Formatted the PC entirely, no fix.
I tried holding F8 to force into 640x480, worked, was able to change to proper native resolution from there, and it worked from there for a few boots, but now it has gone back to intermittently not outputting after boot.

I have no idea what's up. It's not the monitor, as I try plugging in only my old U2311H and that shows the same issue, no video output.

Any idea what's up? My GPU might need RMAing?

If it happens after the Windows logo that suggests driver rather than card...

ie the card can obviously output video because you see BIOS and Windows logo before the driver is loaded (system uses generic PnP drivers until Windows loads)- but then Windows loads the driver and you lose it...

Safe mode - completely remove the GPU drivers (plenty of utils out there that do a more thorough job than the uninstall that came with the driver...) try a different version of the driver (older/newer)

Is there a second output on the card - sometimes that can be worth trying

I feel your pain - these can be frustrating issues...

What about the cable? Have you got a different cable to try?

Edit: This sounds like a similar problem to what is mentioned in this thread : http://en.community.dell.com/support-fo ... ageIndex=1
and if so... eek.

I have heard of some problems with DisplayPort, but I'm using reliable old Dual-Link DVI.
It *seems* to be working fine now, once I forced Windows into 640x480 and changed the resolution up from there, but I'm hoping the same thing doesn't start happening again.

Try pressing Windows key + P a couple of times. Possibly your graphics card is outputting to the wrong port.
