Recommend me a Gaming Laptop!

Unread postby Ash_Williams » 29 May 12, 12:46 pm

I'm going to spend about $1000-1200 on a new laptop to replace my 11" Air..

I'll be looking at anything from 11" to 13" and no more because I don't want a massive screen. I've looked at the Alienware M11x but don't know if it's worth it..

Dell XPS 14z (yes I know you said not bigger than 13, but seriously for the price you would be nuts not to go with it): http://www.dell.com/au/p/xps-l412z/fs

$959 :icon14:

The other option in that price bracket would be the XPS 13Ultrabook at $1199

The only two gaming laptops I think you could fit within that budget.

Try and get a 2nd hand MSI GT740

Or wait till tax return time and buy one new, as gaming laptop + your budget = not exist :S

13" on a gaming laptop is silly. You should consider getting at least 15"

I picked up one of these a few months ago for $950 and it runs basically everything.

Found this sucker, it's also worth noting that I will be using an external display when gaming because I like portability when out and about. (BF3 on a plane should be fun)

I've heard they can be MSY-like to deal with but hardware-wise their products are very sound.

I'm with you btw, 13" is the peeeerfect size for a laptop.

Or I splurge and go this one! 15" is probably overkill but the specs ain't shabby for the price..

I love my Alienware mx-17. Dual 5870's, i7-740QM, 500G HDD, 8G RAM.

Battery life is useless but I never use mine unplugged.

Gets very freakin' hot though. You can buy second hand anywhere from $1kUS on up (I got mine dirt cheap from a friend).

Ouch. I love mine.

First thing i did once it was booted up tho was go on a rampage uninstalling all the preloaded turds that was on it, but i think thats standard for any PC that comes preloaded with windows. The sellers like to fill them with computerherpes thinking that we'd like it, only the non-puter-litterate keep them around rather than nuking burning them with fire.

CD opens fine :P

Dont forget to check the Trading Post and Gumtree. You can find some good deals there if your not silly about looking (never buy something thru the mail, allways go and pick it up in person. Ask for the serial # of the device to call MSI and check the warranty. Purchase Recipt with the laptop if you buy? etc)

Lucky :7
Mine doesnt have a button on physical drive to eject, keyboard multimedia key or right click drive in explorer > eject only.
bluetooth, wifi hotkeys etc etc all require the software.
Wouldnt mind it so much but the stupid thing also has mouseover when you hit the top 1" of screen which is just fkn horrid.
Warrenty service is great tho, had 2 massive white lines appear in the middle of screen bout 3months back, called them, they give me a email with couriers phone number and a tracking number to put on the box while I was still on the phone (took like 5min)
Called courier, pickup anytime I want, from 1hr after I called, no cost to me, laptop fixed and back at my door 3 days later with a new screen installed.

Budget is raised to under $3000, since I can claim the whole bloody thing on tax with it itemised (Yeah I'm being arsey).

Recommend me anything that will play BF3 like a dream plus run a couple of VM's for work.

I'd go with an ASUS G75VW (http://staticice.com.au/cgi-bin/search. ... 5VW&spos=3)

Or if you're in the customise a price mood, an Alienware M15x or 17x that fits your price range, it's a slightly more powerful cpu and you can get a 120hz screen, you will be close to or over your budget though.
