Time for an SSD!

Unread postby nivokk » 8 May 12, 8:45 am

Hi guys!

Im considering getting an SSD for my machine now and just have a couple ofquestions as I dont know too much about them.
What Brands/Models should I be looking for? Also, which should I be avoiding?
Ill need at least a 240GB drive, how much would I be expecting to pay?

Thanks in advance!

Don't have one myself but I've heard good things about the Crucial M4 range. They are around $350 for the 256 GB model.

Was thinking of the 128GB model myself.

I got the 128Gb model and can't fault it so far. Got it from here if interested: http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-2-5-Inch-Solid-State-CT128M4SSD2/dp/B004W2JKZI

Intel is known to be the best for SSD's. You generally pay a touch more but they're faultless. I have the 80gb model and haven't had an issue(had it for over a year I would say).

Before you choose between Intel and Crucial watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqoJpBKiMWs&feature=plcp

Crucial is a very reliable SSD. There was a problem that caused it to stop (like, shutdown) after a certain number of hours, they fixed the firmware within a weekend. They also improved their performance via firmware, rather than releasing a new model of m4... Free updates with dramatic performance increase...

Why not Crucial?

I got mine from Amazon, it's a bit too pricey in most Aussie shops, so, save yourself some decent dosh.

That price is pretty good - how much do they charge to ship to Australia?

Actually NM "This item cannot be shipped to the address you selected."

As of a few weeks ago, Intel 520 was the model to go for. I got mine in a 120GB size, and it's been faultless.

Not sure why you got that because they shipped it to me. I believe they don't do PO Boxes so maybe that was your problem?

So Intel or M4? I'm planning to purchase one tomorrow and haven't decided yet either >.<

I'll be grabbing the 128/120GB version

Go for m4 IMO. Cheaper and just as reliable.

That one shown in the shot, can and does accept Australia, I just tried it myself. The one I bought was from Amazon itself, rather than another seller.

AmazonGlobal Expedited Shipping (averages 8-16 business days) About $7.00
AmazonGlobal Priority Shipping (averages 2-5 days) About $32.00

More items will up the shipping of course. But the shipping cost and the SSD still makes it cheaper than any Aus store I've looked at.

Intel have one of the lowest return rates for SSDs (less than 1%), and funnily enough OCZ have one of the highest (8%-9%). I know they are cheaper and supposedly outperform the Intels, but if 8-9 percent of them have to go back under warranty (and that is counting each time it goes back within the warranty period as overall 'one instance') I wouldn't go near one with a barge pole.

I am personally about to buy an Intel 520. Comparably good speed, good reliability figures.

Amazon still says no. Guess they don't like Adelaide.

Where are these figures coming from?
