doesnt like much over 4.3-4.4.... hmmm i'd read previously that it was more 4.7-4.8

if your only looking for 4.5 i would still go the 3570k.

Gigabyte's auto-tuning program easytune6 i believe is what i was thinking of, i think asus ROG boards and a few others provide OC buttons on the board.

Software overclocks these days are a lot more reliable and stable, and the gigabytes includes a built in stress test to be sure.

Alright mate, after reading some more benchmarks i'm gunna go with the 3570k. Will the Hyper 212 help much with the temps or is it a waste of money? I switched to the sapphire card as i've read plenty of reviews of the gigabyte 7850 with loud/rattling fans.

CoolerMaster CM 690 II Advanced with Window USB3.0 $119.00
LG GH24NS90 24x SATA DVD-RW Drive OEM $22.00
Seagate Barracuda 500GB ST500DM002 $75.00
CoolerMaster Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler $39.00
Corsair TX-750 V2 Power Supply $141.00
Corsair Vengeance CML8GX3M2A1600C9W 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 $75.00
Logitech G400 $39.00
Gigabyte GA-Z77X-D3H Motherboard $165.00
Microsoft Sidewinder X4 Keyboard $59.00
Intel Core i5 3570K $245.00
Sapphire Radeon HD7850 2GB OC $275

looks tight, 750W is a bit much for that system unless your lookin to crossfire down the road.

the hyper 212 will help with temps over the stock cooling unit.

I actually go out of my way to pick up sapphire gear when i get AMD cards. They have been in the game for a bloody long time and their cooler tech was ahead of the cuve (they have had phase chamber coolers since before the 580 made them famous :3)

Ordered the above machine from PC Case Gear last night. Exams finish next saturday so i should have it built over that weekend. I got the 750w PSU more as a future proofing than anything else. Thanks for your help, much appreciated. Also, when i hook up the 212 cooler, will i have to remove any thermal paste already on the cpu and add the hyper compound? What's the go there?

Thermal paste in stock cpu/cooler combos is on the cooler not the cpu.
You will need to buy aftermarket paste unless it is supplied with your cooler.
(theres a few youtube guides on how to apply)
Personal preferance is arctic silver (cause its never let me down)
But there is really very little diff in temps among most of the pastes.. just dont buy it from the local cheepie shop ;)

Yeah I believe some comes with the 212. I'll just use that. I was just making sure I didn't have to alcohol rub off the existing compound first. Cheers.

The PC arrived yesterday, spent all afternoon putting if together. Seems to be working fine. Running arma 2 on full settings was amazing (although i'm getting a bit of white foliage sometimes), and i did the obligatory crysis install. Ran a few burn tests on very high and temps were around 65 degrees on full load. Is this normal? Idle temps have gotten colder since last night, which is interesting - they seem to be hanging around 31 degrees. Does this sound alright (this is at stock btw). Cheers for your help guys

Those temps are fine. I wouldn't worry unless it was getting above 75ish on full load.

See this is what I cant work out, my system is higher spec than that, an it runs arma II fine at custom settings. But I cant max out everything in Arma or it slows to a crawl.

I7-2600K @3.4GHz
Z68-UD3R-B3
Corsair H70 WC unit
16 gig ram
6990 powercolor
Corsair 120 gig SSD (boot drive)
3x 2 TB seagates
Corsair PSU 1000 watt
razor ultimate mechanical KB
G9 mouse
3x 27" Asus screens
NZXT fulltower phantom case.
Gotta be something I am missing with my system, an I cant figure out what.

Isn't the 7850 higher spec than the 6990? Max settings I get around 25fps so I just leave it in high for 60fps.

yer I think it is, but the 6990 is a powerful card (or I thought it was). There is something I am missing that that system has right. Wish I new what it was.

Ahhh, you've got 3 monitors? So i'm gathering you're running some weird **** res? I've only got the 1 monitor running at 1080, 5800x 2560 or whatever it is....On absolute max settings i was only getting 25-30fps. Solid 60 at a little below which is what i prefer.
