Uber Value Computer Thread - 2013 - Xmas Ed

OK OK OK, I have used this thread to build two PC's in the last couple of months (for friends) and they have been pretty damn boss.

Now it's my turn. My PC was hit by a spike when I got my electrical meter upgraded and it fried everything. I underclocked it, replaced the RAM and tweaked a few things and got it going again, but it has been limping along for about 6 months, can only run TF2, and is now shutting down when I turn on the printer hahaha.

So, I am going to be doing this upgrade in bits because I am poor (I spend a lot of money on motorbikes).

Steve, whaddya reckon.
Round 1:
- i5 2500K - $218
- ASRock Z68 Extreme (as specced) - $170
- RAM?

Round 2:
One or two grfx cards.

I'm pretty sure the 6870 I'm running and the PSU are both fine (I tested them on one of the builds I was doing) so round one will get me up and running, round two will finish her off.

I'll be doing some case-mods for cabling (Antec 900 v1) and MAY need to update my CPU cooler to water (currently a Noctua UH-N12P).

Thoughts?

z77 and 990fx to be precise, only a few more days for ivy to drop and reviews to come out so it will be interesting...

just about everything else i have together already, so expect builds for z77, x79 and 990fx, will keep a z68 setup for the time being but will need to consider how well the z77 performs...

motherboard selection is very interesting atm, thats been quite an interesting lead... might need to post up some comparisons...

Im still stunned you can get a i5-3570k and a 670 with 180gb SSD, 2tb hdd, 8gb of ram, watercooling for cpu and a decent case for ~1600 o.0

I'm aiming for the uni student budget, but might stretch it as i know many would love a decent rig for D3...

How about those who don't have an uni student budget and could afford to buy a solid gold computer case*, any temptation to do one of those?

*Metaphorically speaking, I can't imagine gold would have any benefits over steel and aluminium for a case but it's been a while since high school science.

hey everyone,
im just after some opinions on a new build, iv built a pc based on this thread and im looking at overclocking a 2600k to around 4.4ghz and just a little unsure as to which cooler would be a good idea. iv been looking at the CM hyper 212 after reading it as being the best bang for your buck and also read that u can actually move the fan higher incase your ram is in the way. im not sure if the hyper 212 will get me to 4.4ghz and if it does i dont know if the fans would be extremely loud. id use 2 fans for the extra cooling. if anyone has any input its muchly appreciated <3

Can't go wrong with a NH-D14.

i should have also stated the ram im using is corsair vengeance in all 4 dimms, its not low profile so the NH-D14 wont actually fit.
