NAS Selection

Unread postby Snow » 5 Jul 12, 1:23 pm

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone could please help me with making a choice on my first NAS.

Requirements*

Minimum 12Tb
able to run Couchpotato, sickbeard, sabnzb for keeping my legally obtained files in order
able to stream high def movies
Backup my girlfriends 50 photos a day for the last 20 years
store all my music
all the standard stuff ect.

I have been looking at both the synology ds411 & QNAP TS-419P II but they both seem fairly old

Anyone got these or any better ideas?

I have a TS-419P+ and love it. Only really using in for network backups and multimedia streaming at the moment but I haven't had a single issue in the 18 months I've had it. I was going to setup the FTP side of things but my situation has changed and I don't really need to anymore.

Hi Snow, Not a 411, mines an old DS 107. Its been one of the best things I have bought for storage. However looking at your needs Im not sure either Synology or Qnap would work for you. Because they're ARM based they only support a small selection of server side apps outside of what comes with them, though you can bootstrap some of them to run packages from the Optiware list. While both are good, they're not fantastically flexible like a PC server when it comes to software.

I'd look into the Netgear ReadyNAS range. Some of them have Intel Atom CPU's that might suit your needs better.

I know that this is about NAS's so I'll try not to hijack, but another possibility is to maybe build a miniITX computer? should be similar in price to the 4 bay NAS's that you'd need to hold min12tb and would definitely have all the functionality you'd need, such as DLNA, sabnzbd client, etc. And you can build them to use a pretty tiny amount of power if thats the concern.
example
Hidden: show
case,psu,cpu,ramand mb total = $550 + hdd's and would hold 6hdds

there is probably better components to use if you did a little research, i just knocked this up in 30secconds

Otherwise i don't know much about NAS units so, sorry

can link you to http://wiki.sabnzbd.org/install-nas tho

We sell the bigger Synology boxes, the OS(DSM) they run is absolutely mint. Great machine, very reliable and easy to use and the features work as advertised.

As for age, the last 2 numbers in the model indicate the year of manufacture/release the lates being DS1512+ for example. Full of 3TB drives the DS1512+ will give you just under 12TB useable space in RAID 5 iirc.

10.88TB minus overhead about 10.5TB maybe a bit less.
There's also the 8 and 12 bays, which are more cost efficient if you're going to need an expander for the 5 bay anyway.

Hmm yes, a little under 11TB :) I didnt remember correctly.

The expansion chassis for the 5 bays are cheaper than buying a new one but you're right, the 8 bay is probably the best value. The 12-bays are enormous which can be a pain for home use.

I absolutely love my Synology DS411. I've had it for almost a year now and it hasn't missed a beat, used it almost every day for streaming. DS411 might be a little bit old now, and true you might find a better specced NAS now, but Synology are always updating their OS (which is awesome btw), the recent DSM 4.0 update is very slick. A mini-ITX PC with FreeNAS or Windows Home Server is also a good option though.

Also Couchpotato, sickbeard and sabnzb are available for Synology NAS here http://synoblog.superzebulon.org/ I haven't tried them personally though.

The other option is to build your own NAS and use Freenas.

I built mine earlier this year with a Lian Li PC-Q08B, an Asus mini ITX board (with 6 sata), ram, i3, psu and controller card and have 7 x 2TB hdd's in it (a tight squeeze) but it works fantastic plus I get full transfer speed. All up, minus the hdd's the box cost me just under $500 and is upgradeable to bigger hdds as I get them. ;)

As for Couchpotato, sickbeard and sabnzb, I know they(freenas) always have people with in their community that are always adding new things and they have their own guides on how to add programs like these.

Cool find tranquil. Really wish Synology had a user area for custom spk packs on their website.

unRAID is another option, i'm using it currenty with sickbeard, couchpotato and sabnzbd all running.

The below link is a great thread on the XBMC forums with 5 different options to choose from when building your NAS, they tend to be significantly cheaper when you make them yourself, just ignore the pricing etc as it is a US based forum.
