My little brother is more into this sorta thing than me and he's a big fan of the LG models.

Prefers the GUI and everything, and they do tend to play anything.

I used to like LG drives, but the last few I've bought have been scratching my disc's, so I elected to try out a Samsung Blu-ray Combo B123A, so far it seems quite good.

He's looking for actual blu-ray players, not disk drives :P

Samsung Blu-Ray Player BD-ES5300/XY for $118.
HDMI Output
USB for External HDD Support
HDMI 1080p Upscaling
DLNA Certified
USB Movie Playback
USB Picture View
USB Music Playback
MP3, MKV, DIVX, DIVX HD, MOV, AAC, JPEG Playback

There's also a LG Blu-Ray Player BP120 at JB's for $118.
Netcast Entertainment Access IP TV (YouTube, Yahoo! TV Widgets, Vudu, Picasa, Pandora, CinemaNow, AccuWeather.com)
HDMI 1080p Upscaling
USB Movie Playback
USB Picture View
USB Music Playback
MKV, DIVX Playback

Samsung has DLNA so if you've got a media library setup on your computer you can browse and play it, the LG doesn't mention it from the brief look I had.

DVD players are one of those things where "you need to get a GOOD one or it's not worth it" aren't they? I was looking at reviews a while back and they all make it seem like unless you're spending $300+ you might as well be watching on an etch-a-sketch, was really really intimidating.

If the samsung blu-ray player works as well as their TV's i'd get one.

All share and the smart tv's rock, and i dare say most of the kit would be available through the other products... I use a 32" tv with the smart media hub, and i have only found a few files to be unplayable, mostly everything just works, be it off portable hdd or on usb.

What brand of TV do you have? If you get a Blu-ray player that matches your TV brand you'll be able to control both with only 1 remote if they're connected by HDMI.

It shouldnt need it Beast, my tv doesn't have it either and it still works with the Sony DVD controller, they all just use the same frequencies.
