Transferring data from old to new hdd.

I, like many other people on this forum, are itching to install Windows7. However, at the moment I am running Vista (x64) with a 250gb hdd. I wish to do a fresh-install on Win7 onto my new 1tb hdd, but I need to transfer approximately 200gb of data from the old hdd to the new 1tb one. I really don't want to backup all of my data on 50 odd dvd's.

I'm quite new to all of this, so how would I go about doing transferring my data? Cheers

format the 1TB hd put your data on that..

then doa fresh install of win 7 onthe 250Gb HD...

OSs work so much better on smaller HD's

Sweet. So I'll transfer my files over to the new 1tb HD; reformat the 250gb HD, and install Win7 onto it. Now next question is: Once I have Win7 installed, would the 1tb HD just be an external hd? I don't really know how to word the question. It's just that I can just see my 1tb HD as big folder of all files. I would rather have it all under directories (i.e. C/Program Files/Users/Music), instead of one big messy folder. I doubt anyone could understand what I just posted

Well You will see the other HDD listed in "My Computer".

Make a shortcut for the 1tb Drive on your desktop / quick-launch.

In side there you have the following folders.

Music
Movies
Tv Shows
Programs
You Tube Clips
Windows App's
Game Files
Pictures

from there you are organised, and know where to get files from.

You can copy the Shortcut for the folder and place it in the documents folder if u really want. it'll just reroute you after you click on it.

I personally have a whole Tb drive dedicated to music with Itunes installed onto it on my home file server. same for my Movies and 2 x 1TB for TV shows

160Gib - ubuntu 9.04 some random files.
500Gib - Windows 7 Pro Steam (Main Client now - got sick of ubuntu)
500Gib - ext4 - Random Files from movies - Tv show - pictures - files - operating systems.
1Tb - ext4 Movies and TV Shows only (Full)

you can change the location of the user folders (ie, documents, pictures, music, etc.) if you wanted to.

goto the user account folder (C:\user\<account name>\)
right click the folder you want to move > properties > location tab > press move

yeah, this is what i do and its great. just be careful because if you dont tell it to move the old files, it will make a duplicate folder and you may end up with two "movies" folders (or whichever you moved).

i understood this.

your 1tb will show up as (probably) "local disk (d)" in my computer, the 250 will show up as "local disk (c)" will have windows on it, and d can have whatever you like.

you do know you can have directories on an any windows file system (Fat32 and NTFS). so if your 1tb can have folders exactly like your 250 does now.

go to the shop and get some Ice scream, coke and chocolate

then come back eat it then you should be all right

Sweet, so I've formatted that hard drive (it says its a 1tb hdd, but I only got 940 odd gb's). I forgot I have to download my copy of Win7 from the itsnotcheating website! Ahhh

dont worry about the less amount of space

hard drives are measured differently at the manufacturer than how the computer does

its because of the HDD cache and partition of the drive that makes it smaller.

its like when you buy a 80Gb HDD after you do a NTFS partition it shows 76.4Gb (i think) and then well you Divide 80Gb by 1000Gb and you times that by the amount lost (3.6Gb)
