They're laying it on a bit thick with the "murica **** yeah" speeches, there were a couple of hotties in the control room though.

I watched it on my Xbox. I believe it was on PS Home as well.

They were expecting it to go wrong? rightfully so, they should be 'excited', but they honestly didn't do anything they haven't done before.

Like deliver a 1 tonne robot to Mars? You are wrong, they haven't done this before.

You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

Yeah, I guess I don't know what I'm talking about, sorry for even posting. :|
What I see is, them putting a probe on Mars, I really don't care about this situation hence why I have no idea what it actually is for, but I know they have put a probe on Mars before.

I was only wondering why they were cheering like school girls at a Bieber concert.

As previously stated, I don't know what they're doing, a probe is a probe, the weight / size means nothing to me, it's they fact they were so excited about doing their jobs properly.

It involved the work of thousands and thousands of people over 8 years and if anything went wrong all of that would be for nothing. It's not like they could send out a tow truck and bring it back home. They couldn't even guide it during entry, they had to figure everything out before it even hit the launchpad, much less reached Mars' atmosphere. There was also the "7 minutes of terror", which is the time between reaching atmosphere and landing. 7 minutes on Earth where they wouldn't know a result that had already taken place. If it had crashed and burned they'd have to sit there unable to do anything to save it because they would not have even known it needed saving before it was too late. And any commands they sent would have arrived even later.

Most people haven't worked on anything that's taken 8 years to come to fruition, much less involved so many other people who all have to do their jobs right. They've earned the right to be excited and they're allowed to be proud it was their country who made it possible.
Should we eventually colonise Mars today is going to be HUGE part of the epic montages to celebrate the occasion. This mission is going to determine some key factors involved in whether we ever even ATTEMPT such a thing.

But yeah, no need to get excited or anything. It's just hitting a target on another planet.

Do you get excited about what you do for a living?

You do if you've been working on it for 8 years and it works!

Damnit I'm not sure if Ginji's post is half-serious or a little bit of fun like Sath's

I missed the stream anyway, someone link some cool photos? Preferably from the craft and not of some guy's mohawk.

I also noticed this. :>

that livestream makes me want to work on something like that (I'm in the right industry, so I guess it could happen). that feeling would be amazing. all those years work paying off in a single moment. I even got a little bit man-teary seeing them celebrating like that.

I just wish they find something extremely significant. significant enough for it to kick off a new drive to explore space. a drive that causes money to be diverted from political campaigns and defence budgets into things like NASA.
