I know these are supposed to be jokes, but anyone that thinks they're true has a fundamental misunderstanding of what the group is trying to do.

i wouldn't trust that group with any money whatsoever. there's just something not right about them, plus the allegations of them funneling money into the Ugandan military are pretty scary, specially seeing how the Ugandan military are just as bad as the Kony faction.

Kony Discussion

Unread postby PURITy Kin » 9 Mar 12, 11:51 am

I admit I knew and cared little about Uganda before this Kony issue. Most of what I'm about to say came through google.

Some corrections already need to be made about Invisible Children.

1) They are not a charity, they claim to be a movement.
2) They never claimed to be a charity.
3) They clearly state the money goes towards raising awareness, this means the money goes towards their advertising campaign.
4) The goal they aim to achieve is to ensure the US government keep or increase their current commitment to Uganda. The US is already working with the Ugandan Military. InvisibleChildren

Nobody should assume they are a charity. As they are not a charity, they do not have to be accountable to where the money goes. They are a member of the US CFC which does include regulation by the US OPM. It should be noted the CFC is to promote philanthropy, not charity, so the level of regulation is specific to philanthropy, not charity.

Uganda has many problems ranging from civil war, poverty, corruption, and a piss poor economy. There is more than 1 cause of Uganda's problem so there must be more than 1 solution, Invisible Children recognise this. Ensuring the US keep 100 military advisors in the country is only one solution, and this is the solution they hope to achieve from the Kony2012 campaign. Whether it's the best solution or not doesn't really matter, it's the solution they're aiming for. If you disagree with it don't support it.

Personally, I don't believe it's the best solution, but I still admire what they've been able to achieve in a few days since launching the Kony2012 campaign.

Why be critical of people who through this campaign recognise there are problems in the world outside of their own view and want to feel good about contributing to something bigger than themselves?

Why **** on somebodies sudden belief in the need for change, just because that belief came through facebook. Seriously, this is good, whether you agree with the finer points or not; young people becoming aware of world issues, specifically poverty, abduction and slavery is a good thing.

Becoming aware of a problem you've previously put not thought into, and then choosing to take it seriously does not make you a hypocrite or a bad person.

I'm talking about the people in my facebook feed, who poster about Kony.

They generally don't give a **** about anyone but themselves. Reposting has made them feel good about themselves and they think this is "doing something" and their contribution is over. Not one of them will care/remember this next week when the next fad hits facebook.

So why try to make them feel bad just because they feel good about themselves, by posting about something important?
They could be posting about how drunk they got or how they love their new apple product, that makes them feel good too. They also won't care next week. But posting about an important thing, somehow that's bad?

Because pointing out peoples **** with a clever(?) Gene Wilder pic makes me feel good. Why ruin my buzz brah?

edit: also its not important if they do nothing about it.

Right, Kony stuff goes here.

My two cents... no matter how annoying it may be about these kind of feel-good links getting bandwagoned to assauge middle-class guilt, the only alternative is to never raise awareness about anything.

Important stories must be told and retold and retold and retold. If it frustrates you that some vapid tool on your facebook feed retweets everything and does nothing, your issue should be with that person, not the matters that they're regurgitating.

Also, I can see how this thread might attract some super-insensitive posting, so please be mindful that no matter how BS or how true you think Kony is, there are people suffering around the world... don't make too light with that, k?

Did 10 minutes research on topic since I knew nothing about it.

Will not give money, any publicity goals have already been achieved. Care, but not enough to involve myself independantly because then I'd have to involve myself in every other atrosity that happens in the region and that's bloody impossible. Will not post on facebook or twitter because I refuse to involve myself openly in public networking.

That said, this Kony character sounds like a bit of a nutjob.

Food for thought: This pdf (Small Arms Survey, 2007) has some interesting info.
As a result, it is commonly believed that the LRA is an army of child soldiers and the sole perpetrator of war crimes, even though the UPDF has also been found guilty by the International Court of Justice of training and sending children off to fight. One international security expert, summing up the general government information policy on the LRA, confirmed that, ‘Most people still think the LRA is a bunch of children and old guys due to 20 years of propaganda.'
Supporting one bad faction over another bad faction.. That will work out well.
What can change the nature of a man?
