It's a good thing. MSN audio/video sucks. Skype's is good. I still know lots of people using MSN, not many using skype. Win / win for me :)

I got asked about it when I got into work this morning. The question on everyone's mind seems to be "Will you be moving to something else?".

I'm pretty happy and stand by my answer: As something I use daily, it works, and well. Alternatives are not a problem or threat until something "better" arrives for all platforms.

I would require windows, linux, osx, android, ios and other support before I even considered swapping to a rock solid alternative.

I'd say the focus of MS buying Skype is to integrate it into their business focused communications products such as Lync. I doubt they will monetise the consumer version of the product and push people over to Google Talk.

What exactly is people's concern over MS buying them?

shut it down... pull out other OS support so it only runs on windows. turn it into another windows live 2010 (or what ever the latest version is) *curls into a ball and crys*

That would be a completely illogical move from a company who just paid 8 billion dollars (which is a stupidly high amount of money for Skype tbh, about 400 times their annual revenue) to acquire them. The main value of buying Skype is their market share, intentionally damaging that would be sheer lunacy.

that's definitely not going to happen. if it did, people would be driven to their competitors.
