It didnt state it was confidential
It states
Foreign Affairs Minister Bob Carr has released a list of when Australian consular officials contacted WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

What I did find interesting is that in a report back March 1st that Bob Carr knows personally a dozen members of the US Senate, and calls Henry Kissinger a friend.
To say that consular officials contacted him could mean anything from asking him "are you keeping fit?" to "who do you back in this years Melbourne cup?"
It is not always what you read, but how you read that makes a difference.

Read the comments at the bottom of the linked article - it's somewhat factually challenged.

I would have thought the nature of such conversations would be confidential

I did read those and also took it upon myself to familiarize myself with the author before using her as a reference.
I may not totally agree with her on everything she writes, but with so much disinformation and opinions on the subject that it makes sifting through the chaff all that much harder to get to the truth.

truth is, if we spent as long checking our sources we would probably not post anything until after the story had finished.
