Messing with a live one is a dramatically larger fine, drive your boat near Migaloo and it's a $17k fine, go near ANY whale during migratory passage and it's $110000. Pretty sure it's also like $15k for tour/boat operators who get too close, god only knows what they do to someone who actually causes harm to one.

Jeez and what do we get if they interfere with my fishing trip.

About 10yrs ago my father, mates and me were fishing around Cape Cleveland, not the usual whale hangout or pass by, and got attacked by a whale.
Well not attacked really but the damn whale breached no s&*t 2mts from the boat was awesome but damn well nearly capsized us, funniest part we had a german exchange student with us who swore she would never go on a boat again.

But on topic who cares they are kids at that age i probably would have done the same it's a unusual experience, they got excited. I doubt it was nothing more then the usual media sensationalism.

Yes, I would have to agree that I would at least go up and investigate.

Can't say that even the people who think it was a dumb idea seem outraged though...

Only needs one person to be outraged for the headline to be technically correct :P. Possibly they didn't think that "Teens Surfing on Dead Whale Sparks Mild Annoyance" was an eye-catcher.

All I could think about.

I had no idea you could get fined for such a thing. The more you know.

First world problems. If only these people would focus their outrage on something more useful to humanity than a **** dead whale.

You could say something similar about the people standing on it. Don't they have anything better to do than stand on a corpse?

They're teens, I'd rather them 'surf a whale' than be out stealing and spraying graffiti everywhere tbh.

It seems as humans we are trying very hard to stamp out curiosity,
It is not every day that a dead whale washes up on the beach and to be honest, if you can put up with the smell, good luck to you for getting that close.
Personally I would have just had a look and walked past, but in the end, this is just the carcass of a large mammal that most people would never see in their life times.

young guys do stupid things trying to impress their mates, but threatening people with a fine for touching a dead animal is just insane, next splattered roo I see on the road I should probably just leave so I dont upset anyones moral compass by interfering with a dead Kangaroo :(
