"The" MMO Game

Unread postby Dexterian » 3 Jul 12, 12:00 pm

So what's "The" MMO game to be playing these days? PPM or Free - just looking for something fresh and new* and wondering what people are playing out there these days with a healthy community, a healthy oceanic community would also be good!

Something casual and for all ages is also good!

*Please don't mention WoW, Minecraft, LotRO or SWTOR.

Aside from WoW there isn't anything, SWTOR is virtually dead. Wait and see how GW2 goes IMO, will probably maintain a healthy community even if it's ****, just because it's free to play.

It all depends on what you are after. Runes of Magic is fun and has some nifty crafting options and dual classes; as well as a Queensland server. The Shadowbane emulator is almost complete if you want to play the only true PvP MMO that ever was.

Whilst it is not an RPG, there is Lost Saga with OGPlanet that is hellishly fun and damn addictive.

Just some thoughts…

Not really sure why people don't recommend/forget about RIFT. It's been the only MMO to take me away from WoW. I don't play RIFT anymore, but that's because of other reasons. WoW has driven me away, even more so today after my accounts have been banned because a hacker used a stolen credit card (They already know about the hack as they've restored my characters, why ban my accounts over a charge back from a credit company when it was hacked?) Mind you in the e-mail that was sent it said to call them if it was recently hacked (?!). So stupid, so I just cbf with Blizzard and WoW anymore.

I'm currently looking for an MMO to play aswell, the combat in RoM for me felt very clunky, and not fluid at all (Like WoW/GW2).

Other then that just waiting for GW2.

Liked Rift a lot, just like the early days of WoW and Warhammer. Just got bored of them though. Havent played an MMO since Rift first came out really.

Awaiting GW2 quite eagerly though!

I have a Rift sub at the moment, it's great fun. Not playing heaps of it, just here and there.

Finally prepurchased GW2 today though. It's not far off and is likely to be the big thing at least until Mists of Pandaria drags people back to WoW for a bit.

Would love to see another polished MMO to take the throne away from WoW. Although I will admit Blizzard have done extremely well to keep a hold onto so many players after such a long period of time.

I don't.

When you design a game like that, you design for the lowest general common denominator.

I never really enjoy playing 'huge' MMOs, because there's always an inexorable slide towards generalisation.

If I were to start playing an MMO again it would be between SWTOR or The Secret World.

After playing WoW, Rift, SWTOR heavily, i was burnt out on MMO's, except for EvE :), couldn't bring myself to pre-purchase GW2, to much hype and really not seeing much new in it.

So i hit up Tera as a last resort, was expecting to play for a week or so and drop it, nope, it's been the most fun i've had in a MMO in years, simple as that.

Questing is the same as always, dungeons rock pretty hard, the PVP is sweet as, with only most good stuff on the way. Plus it's gotta be the best looking MMO on the market at current, sexy is always good, i think even GW2 will not dethrone it in that sense, the fluidity of movement, the overall good look. Will have to wait and see on that one.

This was exactly how I felt. I ended up getting GW2 and absolutely love it. The game is brilliant, in my opinion its like other MMO's but with all the features just done right. Its much more of an RPG then the usual WoW grind. Also the WvW is a lot of fun and very addictive.

I'm interested to see if your opinion is still the same a few weeks down the line, I havent logged in for 2 weeks and don't feel particularly inclined to, the story is shittier than it pretends to be and the leveling process and gameplay is MUCH more grind intensive than any western style MMO I've played. Pretty much it came time to level an alt for something to do and 10 levels in i felt like **** my wrists, every single quest in every zone is just the same BS over and over, sometimes you do the exact same quest multiple times per zone just for different people, feels like AC mated with Lineage 2.

To bump an old thread (these forums are getting slow!)

I feel the exact same way about gw2... After the first few weeks of playing it, i just didnt play it for a day and felt no desire to at all. When i first played (few weeks since launch) it was just... terrible. So much of a zerg game and people just spamming skills.

Though that's changed now, its actually enjoyable because most people have moved on from it. Can play it with a friend or two and things are actually challenging and fun now. Nothing like the typical 'we can do this!' friend of mine attacking a champion and me just going 'oh **** what have you done!' then we end up taking it down with just 3 of us..
