GoN Pen and Paper RPG - who's interested?

Unread postby DarkMellie » 11 May 12, 6:27 pm

Hiya,

I've had a real yearning over the last few months to get into pen and paper RPG's. I used to play Shadowrun and D&D a fair bit when I was a teenager but I never really understood what was happening.. I just rolled dice. Now that I understand that everything that happens is about progressing the DM's story, I am incredibly keen.

A mate of mine runs pen and paper RPG over on the Something Awful forums and has given me some great tips around how to get it started.

I'm very interested in running a 4 to 6 player RPG campaign on the GoN forums using either the Shadowrun ruleset or one suggested by members. I'd run a recruitment thread that would require people to submit their character sheet (based on the ruleset and my preemptory instructions). Roleplay would be welcome but really it would be about creatively approaching the story I'd put together. It wouldn't require huge investments of time, maybe one or two posts every one or two days just to keep it ticking along? AWOL players would end up getting killed off to maintain whatever momentum there is.

I'd run a simple campaign first just for testers but if that goes well we could get up to all sorts of crazy stuff.

Any takers?

Yeah I'm interested. I've been playing some Pathfinder recently and I've been finding that really fun. I also think I remember seeing threads like this in my pre-GON days at HeavenGames, idk if they still have them...

Quite possibly could be interested, yeah :) I used to play a bit of Shadowrun back in the day, and recently happened to buy a few source books of the latest edition off eBay. Intrigued how it could work over the forums tbh!

I'd lay out the general story and player requirements (e.g. "scenario might contain some hacking, some long-range engagements, some driving" and etcetera) and then use an online dice-roller to determine outcomes (so you'd say "I'm going to take a perception test on that Troll", I'd call it perception+4 then auto-roll a D20+4 to determine how it turned out). God help you if you're messing with that troll and roll snake-eyes, it won't end up pretty.

I'd be keeping track and either myself or the players would update HP and so on with each new post.

With that said, there are some forum specific systems that are quite easy to use. I'll be doing some research (particularly over at the SA forums) as I'm really keen.

I definitely have a scenario in mind, once I can confirm the ruleset I'll put up a recruitment thread.

I think it could be really good fun!

Note: this is not a story-RPG, it will be about dice rolls and stats. There will be some story exposition (like "A shot pings past your face" or "You round the corner and three shady dudes in trenchcoats are doing unspeakable things to an ATM") merely as scene-setters and the players will really be just calling out their chosen actions... but nothing even remotely approaching the feotid depths of our NWN RP forum :D

I don't really know anything about pen and paper RPG's.. but I've always wanted to play one. I'd be keen, if someone were willing to help me out.

YOU ARE IN A FOREST. TO YOUR LEFT ARE TREES, TO YOUR RIGHT, ARE TREES. IN FRONT AND BEHIND YOU ARE TREES. WHAT DO YOU DO?

I played a bit of Dark Heresy...until I shot a bomb and suicided, only to have another dude collapse a building on my already dead, but somehow alive, body.

Im in if its played over the forums or something, I dont have time to sit down and teamspeak each night etc.

One of the primary requirements is being able to read, SO YOU'RE OUT.

this

I'm new to the whole thing but I'd love to see what its all about. If the required commitment level isn't too crazy I'm definitely in.
