Sort of a metagame/promotional tool. Fight for control of the world, earn points for people clicking links off your facebook page, unlock items for use in the game when it's released, etc etc.
The Templars are getting thrashed, it's very sad.
More people should join Team Templar and take the fight to the Illuminati and Dragon.
