Legend of Grimrock

Hi guys, you can probably guess that I'm a fan of these "old-school" single step dungeon hacks. Just thought I would start the LoG thread~ You can share ideas, tips, tricks, and your personal experience/views of playing the game! Remember your spoiler tags!

So I'll start. I only managed about 1 hour last night, but I died about 4-5 times on normal! Haha was fun though~ I like the few puzzles that I've come across till now (just starting level 3). I really really like the improved graphics and ambience too!

Hidden: show
I particularly liked one puzzle on level 2 where there was a central pressure plate which sequentially opened three hidden rooms with the legionaries. I initially tried to quickly kill one so I could get into the alcove, but ended being skewered on all sides. Then I realised I could've just moved around a bit and move into the alcove when the legionary moved out! Lol nice~

Also, apparently ranged weapons always hit, and Dex does not contribute to ranged weapon power, only strength (even with bows etc.). So if you have a ranged fighter/rogue, it's STR all the way for direct Attack power! Kinda weird and different from the traditional dungeon hack. Source: Clarification on role of DEX

Yeah I maxed dex on my starting rogue, only put a few intro strength.. :dodgy:

There's one secret on Level 4 that I can't figure out, and as far as I can see, neither can anyone on the internet. At the moment I'm stuck trying to riddle out another secret on Level 5.

Pretty awesome game so far, despite one or two teething issues that should be patched eventually. Having quite a lot of fun playing, the puzzles are very devious too. My current party is fighter figher mage rouge, although I'm wondering what a 2x fighter 2xmage party would be like, or a 4x fighter party..

I really wish numpad worked for casting spells. Or if there was a dedicated attack button since sometimes I'll misclick the weapon portrait.
What can change the nature of a man?

I'm on my third party right now, and it's getting better.

Four humans:

Fighter with points in armour and sword.
Fighter with armour and axe.
Rogue with assassinate and daggers (she can attack from the back with a dagger), plus holds the torch.
Mage with earth magic and spellcraft, plus rocks.

I like the ranged weapons auto hit because it means a mage can actually do something useful until you start to work out different spells and get the spellcraft up to cast them (otherwise you just run out of energy). I have four spells right now that are just '???'.

My party:

Human Fighter w athletics and swords (high evasion)
Minatour Fighter w high armour and axes (high prot and STR)
Lizardman Rogue w high missile
Insectoid Mage w Ice and Spellcraft

Don't really know what a rogue is good for in here... I thought about increasing Assassination but I figured there is probably a low frequency of attacking mobs from the back. Unless you strafe around them I guess. Reach is good, but that's pretty much it in the assassination tree. Strange that they don't have lockpicking in here, or a unique rogue skill (e.g. Mages cast spells, Fighters are uh... fighters?)

Working ok so far, but always oom for my mage when multiple enemies are present. Also, I should probably have pumped up my Armour for my evasion fighter because at the lower levels (uh, higher level enemies), if he gets hit it really hurts.

You can try messing around with the runes. You don't have to find a scroll to "learn" the spell. As long as you have the skill and know the runes, I think.

There are lots of good reasons to go with assassination.

First, reach is only 12 points, so it's not much to spend to get a constant third melee attack.

Second, you pick up some good passive +attack bonuses along the way.

Third, backstab is dependable as it always happens, and isn't random like the other skills. If it happens every so often it'll happen about as often as the other attacks, and you can control when it does. You can also use spells like invisibility and so forth.

Yeah but it's hard to figure them out... have spent so many goes and they always fizzle.

Yeah I noticed that about Assassination. I think the bonuses on the higher levels are quite substantial.

I'm wondering how does evasion scale with enemy difficulty though~ I'm wondering if the evasion fighter I have is going to survive at the lower depths... :/ (cf. rogue)

Well just finished.

Didn't complete all the extraneous stuff as its my first playthru. The ending was kinda ****. The story was almost non-existent. Very well designed game tho, so it's good for the price. Now back to hunting all the other stuff~ Hopefully when they release the construction kit the community will improve it ~somewhat~
