Very confused at the hate..

Unread postby phewcha » 13 Jun 11, 10:24 pm

I am confused at the hate and bad review scores this game is getting. Truly I am baffled.

I just finished my play through, and given the game is not revolutionary in anyway or anything benchmarking, I most definitely enjoyed it. I found the game fun, especially coming out of playing through LA Noire which in many ways i found to be a great game but by the end of it felt like a grind. I thought the pacing was good enough that i didnt find myself getting bored of the one thing. I thought the shooting mechanic wasnt bad and sluggish like others have said it to be, nor did i find the driving that way (i should state, it most definitely wasnt the best shooting mechanic or driving but it wasnt the worst by any means imo). I thought the shrinking was a lot of fun, both duke and the rc car. I thought the interactivity was enjoyable and changed the pace up. I found the puzzles to be old school, but still satisfying that there were puzzles and another good change of pace. I also found playing it on PC that the graphics were not benchmark, but they were not bottom of the barrel either. I had a lot of fun playing Duke again, his little witty quotes and overall attitude cracked me up.

I been playing Duke since 1992, Duke 1 and 2 and 3d .. didnt play the spinoffs. I am the type of person that plays Multi but I love a good SP and I play nearly every title to come out. Going by IGN, how on earth Duke got 5.5 and Homefront got 7 is beyond me. I honestly dont understand. The fact that someone can enjoy Call of Duty singleplayer (not Cod4, WAW & BO) over this bewilders me.

Given I would give a game like LA Noire 7.9, I would give Duke Nukem Forever 8.1.

Is there anybody else there that feels the same??

Its a fun game. On PC at least, can't really vouch for the 360 version. Load times on the PC are pretty quick.

Its not the most groudbreaking game but its fun and also funny. Though im not a fan of the driving bits.

Though it does seem to take a lot of poetic licence from Half life, which if you read up on the 3D realms story, a main reason it was getting delayed was because games like half life (amoung others) came out, and the head guy leader person wanted to have the aspects of what made the other games good.

Im enjoying it for what it is.

It's getting bad reviews because it didn't live up to expectations.

Yup.

And those expectations have been built up over a couple of years to a decade, depending on where you're reading the opinion.

Taking my time and enjoying exploring the levels. Finding things like a photocopier. :dodgy:

Its Duke Nukem when you can photocopy your **** while in a construction yard office being tipped over by a crane while also trying to fight off aliens with jetpacks.

Yup - everyone says "It's not revolutionary like COD" and then end up judging DNF against it. Pretty sad, because it isn't. It's Duke Nukem, man.

In a lot of ways its the same as Duke 3D, just with better graphics and new environments. Really enjoyed exploring the Casino, and enjoyed the achievements you get. It's pretty much everything Duke, just newer, fresher and with a new look. I quite enjoy it.

You hit the nail on the head there.

I'm enjoying it so far, and to be honest i'm not sure what people where expecting. I have found most game scores to be a bandwagon, so i'm just enjoying it for what the game is.

Same, I certainly didn't expect Duke using a Frostbite 2 engine or anything like that.

I didn't buy it for any revolutionary features, I bought it to remember a bit about the past and a game that I really enjoyed. And I've actually enjoyed the game in it's own right. Maybe it's that I normally only buy games for their MP content nowadays and not SP and this is a refreshing change.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion of course :)

I just keep thinking that it's just Duke - the same Duke as last time, what more is there? Potentially opening up a can of worms here, I know...

if it had been new and revolutionary, it would've been blasted for not being true to duke, or only using the quips to make it duke like...

it was unlikely that they'd make a game that would get stellar reviews no matter which way they took it.

I played about an hour on a mates xbox and liked it. I'll be getting it for PC though because i hate controllers for fps and it felt like it would benefit from being on pc... reviews suggest that's probably accurate. But i should mention i'll wait for a sale, because it's not good enough for me to justify $70 on it, but was certainly a bit of light hearted fun :)

I think my only annoyance of the whole fiasco was the expectations.. Honestly what did people expect?? Me personally, I expected to play a 14 year old game, a dolled up version of Duke 3d. I guess it has just baffled me the reactions this game got.

The sly remarks towards other games cracked me up!!!

*walking up to the mines where there is two wooden boards blocking the entrance* "Sure wish I had a crowbar for this" .. hahah.

It's average.

Trying to capture the Duke humour and nostalgia which it manages to do, all the while let down by poor level design. The graphics do look a little dated but I think that adds to the nostalgia part of the game. I think the limit of 2 guns was painful and made the game a little less fun to play.

Not as fun as Duke Nukem 3D was.
