Yeah the shortcut steam creates is a shortcut to the setup. Every time you run AION via steam your are running the installer. Steam also doesn't keep AION up to date. It's pretty freaking pointless.

The game runs via the NCLauncher, so I just made a shortcut via that, was freaking pointless getting it from steam, should've gone to EB Games and pre-ordered, would've got a cool figurine and downloaded it from the node servers.

If it had of run via steam, supported the steam overlay and steam managed the updates I wouldn't have cared too much. I've not had any problems with other steam purchases working in steam, just AION.

I should've figured NCSoft would f**k it up somehow, can't have 2 game launchers... doesn't make sense... something I should've worked out myself.

Ahhh well! Haha.

You don't need to download the game through Steam to use the account.
To make things easier for yourself and others, download the full client from Internode during open beta, install it, and use that =]!

Aion uses the NCSoftLauncher application (a wrapper/launcher program, similar to WoW's or WAR's except it is used for managing all of your NCSoft games) to patch and launch, though you can run it from an Aion executable if you're patched to the current version (afaik).

*I see you've just posted some of the comments I made, but my suggestions still seem valid ^^

As valid as your suggestion may be, it still renders Steam useless.

As you said, better off downloading it via the internode server. Hell anyone would've been better off downloading it NOT via steam. Not to mention pre-ordering it from a shop grants you a free figurine.

My point though was, and is, it would've been nice if Steam looked after it all much like other titles I've bought off of it. That was the real reason I bought it off steam, thinking it was properly supported... which it is not.

General rule of thumb: don't buy non-Valve games from Steam unless they're insanely cheaper than elsewhere (indie games excluded). :P

Nah it's not all that bad. I got bioshock from steam, america's army... there are a few good releases. Eve was good on steam too.

Just Aion... damn. Should've realised it was too good to be true. I completely forgot that NCSoft have their distribution client... I just thought it'd use steam you know? Ah well.

My point, which I didn't flesh out enough, was to buy it through steam and use a different install of the game - because steam sells it cheaper than most places (the same prices as NCSoft's site where snex and I bought it).

snex and I did that for EVE Online too. EVE was way cheaper through Steam (21 day trial + first month for US$7, essentially 51 days for 15 bucks) than purchasing anywhere else, and Aion's decent collectors editions (the ones without rubbish metal or paper trinkets, but with all of the in-game items) are for sale on Steam (same as NCSoft's version, which I mentioned snex and I bought).

Steam's pricing on Aion renders is a competitor, rather than useless.
However, not being able to make it work IS useless - and I'm not referring to the implementation on Steam.

Surely they will fix the steam version up before the game is actually released..

Still a month to go..

Is any MMO released via steam managed by steam?
I don't think its steam's fault, more the fault of NCSoft, as they wouldn't allow steam to control patch distribution etc. I don't reckon any MMO developers would want to let steam manage a large chunk of its patch distribution.

If you've been reading, that's EXACTLY my point and problem with buying it from steam. I bought it from steam expecting it to be managed by steam, being able to have the steam overlay etc.

@Skuzzie; yes there are some MMO's managed by steam, EVE is one of them.

so what exactly does Steam download then, is it the same as this file from node Aion - Tower of Eternity Online NCSoft Compressed Files (Aion_Main_0.0.0.0To1.0.2.10.ncpatch) ? im still deciding to buy it from steam or not, its only $72 and dont want to pay $89 from GAME.. it cant be worth an extra $17 to not get it from steam, right?

if that file is the same as what steam gets, then can i buy it from steam, then download that file from node, and then what do i do with that file? do i have to download the NCsoft launcher separately and import that file into it? and how do i get my cdkey and stuff from the steam version to setup an account, how does that all work if it doesnt even use steam in the first place.

noob questions i know but i'm confuzzled

Nah, I'll call bollocks on this.

I have (too) many games via Steam .. most of them non-Valve .. and everything works perfectly.

Now, that word again, in case you missed it.

Perfectly.

Yeah, you're right.

I don't have many games on my account (relatively), but they all work fine.. except for ArmaII's first patch. :P

I don't know where I pulled that one from.

I have purchased AION via steam and wanted to download the patch which is located here: http://games.on.net/file/28895/Aion_...13_to_1.0.2.14 since it is free content. How do I install this patch via the node server as it is not an EXE?

All the people blaming steam, :/... its not steams fault... The dev's give what they want to be hosted to steam. Steam is just the bit in the middle that hold it for you.

The steam overlay does work, if it doesn't there is something wrong with your setup.

2 game launchers = a lot more work.

Also about the AION launcher and patches...
Really...
You want them to be able to patch threw steam for steam versions, and then use the launcher for the cd versions?
Any idea how long that would take????
Better to have everything updating in the 1 place.

Also dex, right click the icon in steam, "place shortcut on my desktop".
Look where thats pointing to.

Think I may have to try this.
