From reading around and trying many times to get Aion to work, I have deducted the following things.
If you tried update aion friday night by the latest, you would have 1.5.0.1 and would need ncsoft program auto update, or manually update with a file from games.on.net
If you tried to use the file after midnight friday *early saturday* the game became version 1.5.0.6 and would not accept the current latest patch on games.on.net. You would need to auto updated (440 meg patch, to 1.5.0.6)
No idea if there is a 1.5.0.1 to 1.5.0.6 manual patch yet, but for people wanting just to play/be ready asap, just let Aion Auto Update. Keep trying if it's busy.
