enough shade and good soil mate.
depending on where you are, aussie summers can be absolutely brutal to a lot of plants, especially the more delicate spices (basil, corriander etc). that said, they do need to get a good amount of sun too

it can be a lot of work, but if you want to retain a good healthy sod of soil for the plants to grow in, you might want to dig an enourmous hole...maybe 0.5m deep, and place something to help retain water - if its that kinda soil. black plastic stuff usually works, you do needa perforate it here and there though, just to let roots/excess water trickle out.
aside from that, there should be some good resources all over the net.
but the biggest thing is to make sure you give it the right growing conditions - you may not be able to grow some things.
