Vegetable Gardens

Unread postby RogerTheIncredible » 26 Jan 12, 9:38 am

A friend recently started growing a lot of the staples in his backyard (tomatoes, spinach, pumpkin, potato, broccoli, etc) and I have been motivated to get something going at my parent's place.

If anyone has any tips and/or links to resources for backyard farming I would deeply appreciate the hookup. Just generally sharing experiences would be great too. I'll post updates as I progress with my garden.

I'd love to have a proper vegie garden again, a big one in the backyard. but things don't work out that way... so.... I grow a few things in some pots. Chillies, tomatoes, beans, spinach and now shallots and coriander :D

enough shade and good soil mate.

depending on where you are, aussie summers can be absolutely brutal to a lot of plants, especially the more delicate spices (basil, corriander etc). that said, they do need to get a good amount of sun too :P

it can be a lot of work, but if you want to retain a good healthy sod of soil for the plants to grow in, you might want to dig an enourmous hole...maybe 0.5m deep, and place something to help retain water - if its that kinda soil. black plastic stuff usually works, you do needa perforate it here and there though, just to let roots/excess water trickle out.

aside from that, there should be some good resources all over the net.

but the biggest thing is to make sure you give it the right growing conditions - you may not be able to grow some things.
