The first time I took a measurement was 7th January 2011. The next time I weighed in was 31st January and then daily since then.

I must say the perception of a weight value as being fat is disturbing. It's almost like relying on BMI to dictate someone's health

I'm confused, I think comparing someones weight to the height is a very simple efficient way of measuring if your fat, sure looking at weight alone can be misleading but he clearly stated his height as well. I also cant see what's wrong with using someones BMI to determine if they have an unhealthy level of weight, either being too fat or thin. I know its an awkward conversation to talk about, but I'm not sure exactly what unit of measurement you think would be more appropriate. Counting fat rolls maybe? If so I'm a 3.

Also congrats on your weight loss! Bigger congrats on having the self determination to start and stick with a diet plan on your own accord. :)

Body density might be better than BMI?

Tydus, the issue with BMI is that is assumes that being heavy is bad. And muscle is heavier than fat. So it tends to say that beefy athletic people are overweight.

I'm basing my fat scale on how many hand full of fat I can grab on my stomach alone. Also doing the Homer Simpson blubber test and watching my stomach keep moving for a few seconds after touching it tells me I'm over weight.

I also know what I weighed when I was in my mid 20's and doing martial arts 4 times a week. Since then I stacked on 22.7 kg in about 9 years. Most of that came from injury. The initial weight gain was done when my shoulder decided it didnt like being attached to my body. A quick trip (6 months) to the good ol' hardware store and a few screws later the should socket was fixed. The last approx 14 kg was put on in another 6 months following a back injury where I was unable to do any form of exercise.

Since then I have slowly strengthened my back injury to the point now where I am able to excercise. It's now a matter of getting and keeping a state of mind in place where I want to work out and eat right.

According to my BMI in January my BMI was 30.8 and now its 27.3. So I have gone from being Obese to Overweight. I don't really use that as an indicator but of how I look in he mirror and how much fat I can get in my hand. Also another factor is how many new holes in my belt I need to make and how loose my shirts are.

Congrats on the progress.

I'm one of those people that never put on weight. As it is if I'm not careful about what I eat I actually start to look pretty terrible. Working out helps of course but I'm not very motivated. If I have a couple of hangovers in a row, skip a meal and just generally get too busy to eat I start to look a bit ill.

As a result I have worked out (for me at least) the most efficent way to quickly put a bit of weight on. For me it is soft drink, iced-cream (specifically maccas sundays), bread, pasta and milk. Sounds kind of normal i know but the thing I found interesting was that most junk foods have nearly no effect at all.

So while cutting junk food from your diet is always going to be a good idea for your health, be careful about what you replace it with.

Good luck.

I do understand this and i was going to point out this very minor flaw and Im by no means saying that its a perfect tool, because it will fail on the fit end of the body type spectrum. But for telling overweight people roughly how overweight they are and when combined with its simplicity and ease of use i believe it is a perfectly respectable tool.

I used to be one of those people who didn't have to worry about what I eat. But as I've been ticking closer to the big 3-0 (years), my body's metabolism is changing and I now have to watch what I eat and go to the gym regularly. So if you're a young 'un, then enjoy it while you can.

Generally speaking, "beefy athletic people" don't need to know whether or not they are overweight... presumably, they know if they are fit or not.

It's a general tool for the general populace.

I havent replaced the junk food with anything, in fact when I used to snack on chips/chocolate I now don't eat and I'm not missing it. I'll grab a drink of water or have a tea if I need to.

Also I have reduced my meal size from filling my plate to more vegetables and smaller meat portions.

I was out today and I normally have a soft spot for sausage sizzles and for the first time I had no urge to buy one. In fact Saturday night the wife wanted a hotdog and chip's so I got one myself. Hotdogs are another must have for me and before I could eat them everyday, but once again for some reason I didn't enjoy the hotdog or the chips.

My lunches used to consist of 2 sausage with bread, maybe some bacon and some cheese, sometimes a sandwich with fritz and sauce or a hotdog. Now I have a wrap with tomatoe/lettuce/cucumber and a variety of meats. One day I'll cook up a little bit of chicken, other I'll have some salmon, or won't add meat, or like today I had 4 weetbix( I got up late) .

Never said i was confused about BMI, on the contrary i defended it as i feel it is a very practical convenient way to tell initial fitness. It may not be perfect but it gives you a good idea. To which you said it was bad because it doesn't accurately measure the fitness of a demographic it was never really supposed to help, beefy athletic people. If used correctly, BMI will give the general population a general idea on their current fitness. At the end of the day doesn't matter what unit of measurement you use if your fat.. your fat. Either way were going to have to agree to disagree here, because i don't want to turn a positive thread into another useless e-gument.
Again, good luck on your fitness regime!
