How would you keep, as a vegan, your B12 levels up?

I'll never understand a vegan. We were built to eat meat, not playacting at being rabbits.

You need about 2grams per kilogram of bodyweight.

This doesn't change whether you like meat or you don't. If you don't like meat, then you will need to get protein from other sources. This is fairly easy to do as a vegetarian but becomes difficult to do as a vegan.

You need to maintain a balanced diet regardless of whether you are a vegan, vegetarian or a normal person :P

**** that's a lot of protein per person, so it would be 160 grams for me... Haha you must be talking about a muscle-gain diet, not a day-to-day diet as the op said.

Loosely speaking (because it depends on age/weight/health), the RDI for a normal person is:

* 0.75g/kg for adult women
* 0.84g/kg for adult men
* 1g/kg for pregnant and breastfeeding women, and for men and women over 70 years.

2g/kg is a stupid amount of protein to consume unless you have a trained dietician monitoring your diet - it'll stress your liver and kidneys, deplete your calcium (resulting in fragile bones) and is generally unnecessary for muscle growth (creatine etc, are a different matter).

Eating raw food (especially plant matter) isn't a good alternative is nutrition is what you are after. Its significantly harder for our body to break down raw plant matter than cooked plant matter.

IMO veganism is stupid. Vegeterianism i can understand, but not veganism. And yes, i do know vegan people and why they are vegan. But i still think its stupid :)

Apparently a good source of B12 for vegans is some kind of oat. I cant remember the name of it, but I can find out if anyone is interested

Deficiencies in B12 are not restricted to the vegetarian\vegan diet. For well-informed vegetarians & vegans the adequate intake of protein, iron, Calcium and B12 is not really an issue. Vegetarians and vegans that I personally know are very aware of what their nutritional needs are and the properties of the food they consume, and for that they remarkably fit and healthy.

Everyone is different so not matter what your diet choice is, being informed on what your personal requirements are and the nutritional value of the food you consume is the key to a balanced and healthy diet\life.

Your nutritional requirements are not anywhere near as "personal" as you seem to think, your body isn't an individually evolved organism.

Most of the backlash against veganism stems from it being flat out stupid when it comes to ease of meals, anyone who argues that it's as economical or as easy to live as a vegan and not be deficient in vital things is 100% full of ****.

Well, imho it doesn't really matter if you're vegan/vegetarian/omnivore in terms of nutrition. Anything you eat, your body will break down into it's basic components for use. Assuming that a vegan/vegetarian/omnivore consumes the same nutrients, no one is healthier than the other.

Now the thing that'll blow your brains is how you go about getting your nutrients.

Personally there's no way I'd ever give up meat. :D

We are free thinking conscious beings that can make informed decisions about what we put into our bodies for various reasons. Just because we evolved by eating meat doesn't mean we have to continue the same practise. This whole argument is ridiculous and if you ask a vegan or vegetarian why they don't eat meat more often than not their primary reason is on ethical grounds. I totally respect people that can do that, because I know I can not stop eating meat.

If you make the choice as an adult not to eat those tasty products from animals, that's fine, it's your choice and you should deal with results of any nutritional imbalance. But when you start forcing that 'don't eat cows because it's evil' **** on your kids and they suffer as a result, then your messed in the head to put in nicely.

The body can't synthesize protein, you need to eat protein for you body to replenish/repair. Nuts are not high protein, they're high fat. Legumes are not high protein.

My only problem with vegans is most of them are uninformed and full of ****, pushing their bad ideals and habits on other people. Kind of like weekend door knocking bible bashers.

I fully apologise to vegans out there who do know what they are talking about.

What? When was the last time you saw a vegan strong arming people into not eating meat? I must have missed that fundamentalist rally. As for being uninformed I think you need to look past your local meat fridge and see what is available for vegans in terms of produce.
