White Chia Seeds

Unread postby .♥. Cupcake .♥. » 26 Apr 11, 12:22 pm

It's fairly new to be known to the public eye (it's now added to some grain breads) but is the hype about Chia Seeds really all that?

I've been taking about one tablespoon of white chia daily, as they say it has health benefits of bone health, digestive health and brain function. It's quite expensive ($5-$6 for 150grams), but I thought, hey why not lets try.

Anyone else have more insight?

Wikipedia is usually a good starting point - providing a jumping off point for deeper research if needed.

Two quotes might explain the level of hype - and the actual benefit

"In 2008, Australia was the world's largest producer of chia."

"Although some research indicates potential for dietary health benefits in certain disease conditions, this work remains sparse and inconclusive."

I've actually jumped into the deeper research and I get such a muddle of information, it's hard to know. I asked my doctor and he couldn't give me a conclusive answer either lol.

That's why I wondered if anyone here at this community would have any first hand experience.

No idea on the health benefits, but Chia bread is quite tasty compared to the generic alternative. You may want to consider that as an alternative to seeds straight. I think it is about $3 for a small loaf at Bakers Delight.

I think there was some improvement in the overall digestive health, you feel less weighted down and bloated.

No, not quite. Both do help in arthritis, however I would say omega-3 fish oil tablets are still the way to go for that.
