Slow Cookers: Battlefield 3

Unread postby Cas Bitton » 23 Apr 12, 7:06 pm

I caught up with my family last week and they insisted I get one before winter starts, so I did :P

It's been a few years since we had the last topic on slow cookers. I reckon it's time to chime in and see how Sathias and others are going :).

Do you have any killer recipes or book recommendations (with a link!)? Let's do this :D

Adding BF3 to any title topic gets views, it's a fact. This is also the 3rd topic about slow cookers. It's a suitable title  ;)

Have you got any recipes or tips? :D

hahaha

I've gone a bit nuts with the slow cooker since the last thread :P The turfed the cheapy I got from the supermarket and bought a 6 litre one from Good Guys, sooooo much better.

Found some awesome slow cooker books, these are the two best ones I've found.

http://www.amazon.com/The-Best-Slow-Coo ... 0778800385
http://www.cookbooks.com.au/book/Slow-C ... 962260.htm

The first one has a recipe for Slow Cooked Chicken Fried Steak, the gravy it makes it just amazing.

The second one has a recipe for Veal Olives, veal schnitzel hammered flat then rolled up with breadcrumbs, prosciutto and parmesan then a toothpick put through it. They then get put in the slow cooker and cooked in a gravy.

Good separate, but I combined the gravy from the first with the olives from the second... serve it with some nice cheesy mashed potato...

Such a topic tease

Falling short of contacting Mumma Dean, i don't have any recipes. However, she used to make a mean Indian style curry.

so many things, so little time. any stew-like dish normally made with chicken comes out a billion times better in a slow cooker. the slow cooker makes the chicken so tender that is slides off the bone. we have apricot chicken regularly, plenty of curries with both chicken or beef, though chicken comes out better IMO

as for specific recipies....no idea ;)

Yeah this was a winner of an idea  :D

Nice 1kg beef roast from woolies, was about 8 bucks
Can of diced tomato
Quarter of a cup of red wine
One brown onion
Cut a few slits in the top, quarter garlic cloves and insert into slits along with fresh rosemary sprigs

6-8 hours later...... BAM :D

My go-to pork recipe for in the slow cooker.

What you need:
Pork (whole scotch works best for this, but anything else can too if you trim the skin/fat off)
Sweet Potato
Apples
Allspice
Cinnamon
Ground cloves
Ground nutmeg
A bottle of apple cider

I don't measure much of this, it tends to be I adjust all the other larger stuff to fit around the pork.

- Slather the pork in the spices, and give it a good rub in.
- Cut the sweet potatoes into large chunks and cover the bottom of the slow cooker, you want a layer at least 3cm high. Try and get it in a single layer.
- Poor the apple cider over the potato, place the pork on top.
- Core and quarter the apples and place those around the pork (and any more sweet potatoes you might have.
- Try and wait 8 hours while it cooks and the smell tortures you with delicious temptation.

Enjoy!

Left over tip, take some bread, smear the sweet potato over that and fill with pork!

Today's mission! :)

Target: ~600g cheap chuck beef, 1 coopers stout, 160g button mushrooms, 1 brown onion, 2 cloves garlic, 1 tablespoon thyme, bit of salt and pepper

Objective: Food city

After it's had a good ~7 hours in the slow cooker, chuck that into a dish with some pastry ontop for 30mins in the oven.

Enjoy pie glory :o :D

As usual, photos look pretty horrible so I'm not going to bother posting any from my phone this time
