I was wondering if you guys have some experience with older cars that have been great reliable daily drivers. When I say old I generally mean pre-1990 but a year or 2 in the other direction is ok.
The reason I ask this is because I want to buy another car but I refuse to purchase anything new-ish as cars are just a bad investment. They cost a lot to maintain, insurance rates are higher and their value only goes down (well, until they become vintage
). Plus old boxy cars are just so much more interesting and badass in my books
I've owned 3 cars so far. A First gen Mitsubishi Magna (probably 1985-1986)
and 2x1989 BMW E30 318i's.
The Magna was rubbish and died shortly after I bought it. Although, it was not maintained very well so I cant really give an accurate opinion on it. So I will just leave it at that.
The 1989 E30's are terrific. The M40 engines that they run (found only in late models) are great little 4 cylinders. My first one had a serious coolant leak and was overheating severely. It went right past the red on the temp gauge at least a dozen times in a single day by the time I got it home. After I fixed the leaks it drove as if nothing ever happened. Unfortunately, I trusted my car to a friend who generously wrote it off into a pole. So I bought another one
It has been a lovely little daily for me ever since.
My dad had an old Toyota KE30 Corolla which he drove to Leigh Creek (536km from Adelaide) on only 3 cylinders! He has no idea how to maintain cars and he had it for a good 8 years before selling it (still running!).
