Old and reliable, too much to ask?

Unread postby alek » 5 Apr 12, 2:54 pm

I was wondering if you guys have some experience with older cars that have been great reliable daily drivers. When I say old I generally mean pre-1990 but a year or 2 in the other direction is ok.

The reason I ask this is because I want to buy another car but I refuse to purchase anything new-ish as cars are just a bad investment. They cost a lot to maintain, insurance rates are higher and their value only goes down (well, until they become vintage :P). Plus old boxy cars are just so much more interesting and badass in my books :D

I've owned 3 cars so far. A First gen Mitsubishi Magna (probably 1985-1986)
and 2x1989 BMW E30 318i's.

The Magna was rubbish and died shortly after I bought it. Although, it was not maintained very well so I cant really give an accurate opinion on it. So I will just leave it at that.

The 1989 E30's are terrific. The M40 engines that they run (found only in late models) are great little 4 cylinders. My first one had a serious coolant leak and was overheating severely. It went right past the red on the temp gauge at least a dozen times in a single day by the time I got it home. After I fixed the leaks it drove as if nothing ever happened. Unfortunately, I trusted my car to a friend who generously wrote it off into a pole. So I bought another one :D It has been a lovely little daily for me ever since.

My dad had an old Toyota KE30 Corolla which he drove to Leigh Creek (536km from Adelaide) on only 3 cylinders! He has no idea how to maintain cars and he had it for a good 8 years before selling it (still running!).

I've had old cars that are reliable and also have friends who have had old reliable cars. Just depends if they are maintained or not, and if you keep them maintained. Though sometimes it's often hard to find a car that is reliable.

I'm cruising in my '98 EL Ford Futura, will never get a new car till this one dies, Don't see that happening for a while hardly gets maintained either only a oil change and filter change every 6 mths been flooded ( water ) twice. and still goes great.

If i didn't want Air con i'd still have my XF panel van

I agree cars are way too expensive i'd rather have **** car and nice things then be like my mates and live in shoe boxes with flash cars

Ford Lasers.
KE or similar.

Hard as nails, tough as balls and cant be killed (except by kangaroos and solid steel poles).

Ive owned a couple, which spurred family on to buy a couple as well. Mine has been passed along twice, still kicking strong. The 1.6 liter isnt too shy for a little 4 either. Runs on the smell of an oily rag too.
All I know is my gut says maybe.

If you can remember back to a silver-turned-Matte black-turned yellow Ford laser. That thing finally died when it ended up as fodder for the monster trucks (after it got sold to u-pull-it)

I agree, those lasers are indestructible.

Oh yeah, QFT.
Had one of those too, actually, my first car was a 323 hatch. Just a laser with a Mazda badge.

I drive a '92 Toyota Paseo, 20 years old now and still runs perfect, fuel efficient and working A/C interior etc.

The main thing really is finding a car that's been looked after properly. (which is why I recommend staying away from Commodores because it seems everyone and their mothers have one and thrash the **** out of the engine.

At least that's how it is around here in Newcastle area.

Buy a late 80's Hilux.. I don't buy into the myth, but it is without a doubt the only vehicle I owned long term that never required anything.

bah, '69 jeep cj 5 or any CJ for that matter, pretty much the civilian version of the military jeep. Tough as nails, just requires water and oil...

not like xj's...

:P

for the Lazer, god i hated mine, i blew the gear box and then a few other things in the motor until we sold it on for parts...

to add to the whole drove it hole put fuel and oil in it and it went x years later, its what we did with our CJ5, it was under a tree at an automotive repairer's for 7 years, i went halvesies in it with the old man ($50 a piece) we got it home, oiled it, battery and short fuel tank after we had emptied it all out... and it started...

it now needs a windscreen and a wiring loom...
