Getting an early pink slip?

Unread postby Cel » 5 Feb 12, 9:42 am

Hi guys,

Some of you might remember I posted a thread about selling my car. After some advice and research, I've decided to keep it after all.

Now the problem is I'm going overseas next week, for a few months, but my rego is expiring in March. I haven't got my renewal notice yet and probably won't get it before I leave. I can take care of payments and such while I'm overseas (My roomate can forward me the payment details when it comes) but I've gotta get the pink slip before I leave (roomate does not drive).

Is it possible for me to take my car to a mechanic to get a pink slip now, even though I haven't got the renewal notice yet?

Also, is it possible to renew the rego even without getting the notice? Maybe if I pop into an RTA (or roads and marine services now) and process it there?

Pink slip only lasts 30 days in NSW afaik.. Mechanic thought it was 90... lol

Which state are you in?

NSW

The renewal notice should come at least a few weeks before rego expiry date right?

I leave on the 12th of Feb.
Rego expires on 14th of March.

If I get the e-safety check done sometime this week, and it lasts 30 days, that should last long enough until the renewal notice comes and I just process green slip and pay rego then?

You sure it's 30 days? I just searched it up apparently it's 42 days? (http://www.nrma.com.au/understanding-in ... -car.shtml)

Taken directly from RTA site;
New registrations or interstate vehicle registration transfers

Vehicle identity and safety check.
Valid for 28 days.
Attend an Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Station.

All renewals of registration or transfer of registration within NSW

Vehicle safety check.
Valied for 42 days.
Attend a light vehicle Authorised Safety Check Inspection Station (ASCIS).

So it varies... like everything with the RTA...

There's always some buffer if you don't register your car in time.
I think it's 3 months before the car will have to go for a full inspection (blue slip/identity & safety check) so if the rego expires, it's not the end of the world.

You could always give the RTA a call and verify... I found their phone service quite good last time I called.

Oh yeah, no, that's not the problem. The problem is I don't have a garage, and you can't leave you car out in street parking if it does not have current registrations. Not too long ago I forgot to stick on the new sticker for the new rego, and I got a sticker stuck on the side window saying the council is planning to tow my car away. I immediately put on the new stickers of course.

I tried to call them this morning, but it just took me to their automated "The offices are closed and open so and so hours". Will try again tomorrow

But can you do that without the renewal papers?

You can usually go to the RTA and get them to print them out for you.
All I know is my gut says maybe.
