R8's are nice, but if I wanted a practical supercar, I would get a 911

They just remind me of overengineered british wank... They're ugly as all hell too... Guess that's why it's your dream car and not mine... hehe.

it doesn't 'remind' you of it -> it IS overengineered british wank, and ugly as hell, that's why I like them... I think..... they are different but amazingly thought out cars and the company's direction was driven by what the existing customers wanted rather than what marketing/desk jockeys wanted to provide.
Just a few things that Peter Wheeler made clear while he was around - Customers started taking his lightweight cars and dropping bigger engines in, he asked if they wanted them from the factory, so they teamed up with Rover etc in the years to come, didn't make huge profits, just better cars. The 'wedge' shape they used to have was ditched for curvier things after he found out there's more strength in curved panels for impacts. Despite the UK's requirements, did not offer ABS or Airbags as in the convertibles "in a rollover and airbag would put the drivers head into the danger zone', and ABS wasn't going to be effective for someone driving a TVR, it reduces braking distance.
I loved the stubborn logic behind it all -the story of them taking the two required chassis to the safety check - they loaded up the first chassis for crash testing, rumour was the people running the test started to laugh that it wouldn't pass. First impact test successful by a long shot. Wheeler made them load the same chassis for the second test which passed again.
Al Melling's involvement in developing one of the greatest engines on the planet for TVR just makes me wet in the pants too. He's an absolute nutcase but when it comes to engines, he is a god. Porsche is only just catching up now (i believe their 6 for the new RS is out to 4L output 125hp/L ?) and he's been developing F1 engines, bike engines for years, he's brilliant.
So probably more than the cars themselves, I like the history behind the company.
