Thinking of buying a Subaru Liberty.

Unread postby Mr Spinks » 24 Apr 10, 4:29 pm

Second hand model between the years of 2006 - 2009.

Anyone got any feedback/knowledge on this car?

good choice. new ones look kinda fugly.

would recommend the GT, 6 Speed Manual STi Tuned, Brembo's, STi Rims etc. like a rex, except comfortable.

I have the 2000 RX model as my first car, love every inch of it! Dad also has WRX STi 2004(?) Limited Edition. I like Subarus :P

just purchased a 05 (4GEN) turbo subaru liberty sedan and i love it.. so much. leather interior, sunroof, 2L turbo, semi-auto, awesome stereo, all the other cool stuff. 98000km, and we got it for $22k. we actually got a really good deal on it, and they usually sell for a bit more (around 25). the car has a bit of power (the 6cyl liberty has about the same), and is fairly luxury. good combination.

great car. really great. handling is awesome. really comfortable. not too obnoxious.

when you start going 06+, they start being fairly expensive. how much were you looking at spending?

What are you planning to do with it?
If its a daily driver and you're not fussed about driving the pants off it, the base models aren't too bad.
If you plan to give it a hard time, you really need to consider the gearbox/diff/transfer assembly a bit more. STI bits are a big step up in this department.

Also be mindful of the head in the turbo version - they're fairly easy to crack because of the way the cooling system works. Again, only a consideration if you're going to give it a hard time (eg, track racing).

Just a daily drive. I wont be driving the pants off it. This would be my third car and i'm over that young impulsive stage so now I just use them to get from A to B. Obviously though I want to do it comfotably and in something I'm happy with.

I reckon my limit would be $35k but would push a little higher if needed to get something I really liked. I've been promoted at work so the money isn't really an issue at this stage but obviously I don't want to spend more than I have to.

i would recommend sticking to the turbo or 6cyl models. they are definitely more fun. i know you said you're over that, but you'll probably still enjoying putting your foot down every now and then. they aren't that much more expensive when they are used, and your budget more than caters for it.

you probably don't need to get any of the sti tuned or b spec ones as it doesn't seem like you're aiming at something like that, so you could probably get a later year, lower km one with all the extras. leather seats, sunroof, gps navigation, good stereo etc.

Straight 4 means noon turbo . I know a turbo 4 would be very nice. It's also a WRX STi and not a liberty.

Straight refers to the cylinder layout. The WRX uses a flat/boxer engine though, so it would be ruled out with that criteria.

Naturally aspirated = non turbo/supercharged

Well seeing as how it is practically the exact same engine in the WRX and Liberty (Me and my dads model anyway). Still a turbo and racing parts and a manual gearbox helps alot, along with professional tuning and an after-market chip :tdown:Also, going a tad off-topic.

I love my liberty, thats all i can add :) My 2001 model was $12k second hand at the 115,000 mark with replaced timing belt (at 100,000) and really well looked after. :)
