Speeding isn't the cause - inattentiveness and poor judgement is the cause.

which is bad driving d...

the problem is the government blames speed, when they should be blaming bad driving, the problem is its ALOT (read a metric ****) more profitable to blame speed and put up a million speed camera's.

This, 100%
Myself, I'm a learner driver and have completed about 60 hours of driving (~15 night). At the moment I'm pretty confident that I'm capable of driving solo however I would definitely consider taking extra courses purely for having the experience. Luckily my Dad, who is primarily surpervising driver, has been a rally car and truck driver and shows me what to expect from ABS, wet roads and how long a truck can take to stop.

This kind of knowledge should be mandatory rather than forcing future Learner drivers to do more and more logged hours which can be easily faked. As far as I know the number of logged hours has been increased to about 200 hours of driving, which is ridiculous.

It's not the drivers skills thats causing crashes, its their intelligence levels and personality. Training them to be better drivers wont make them safer drivers, if anything it will just make them more confident.

the logbook system is a joke and should be abolished asap. i think we should have drivers ed at schools like its done in america and advanced driving schools more available and affordable to everyone.

here's the discussion that led to this thread.

had a lot more in facebook chat with my mate, but he would not be swayed. i wasn't even saying speeding isn't a factor, i was merely saying its not THE factor. but yeah, anyway.

love the line "the point is that drivers dont have control over what situations they get into on the road."

Just say to them; you've gotta have control of your own car in preparedness for situations. Speed is NOT a factor in most situations.. Concentration and reaction play the most important part.

every crash ive seen or been in has had nothing to do with speed, every near miss has been the same, people that love to blame speed and hoons for all the crashes and deaths on our roads really piss me off, sucks even more driving a modified turbo import, people look at you like you are about to mount the footpath and run them over

driver training here is ****, how many drivers are taught how to control there car when something goes wrong like getting sideways or having to brake in a emergency, pretty much none unless they go do it themselfs, they arent forced to learn that kind of stuff even tho it could save there lifes but they will never force people to learn how to drive

I'd like to disagree with the speed cameras being revenue raising cameras.

When speed cameras are placed in strategic areas that are known speeding hotspots, you shouldn't be speeding.

Also if you're speeding and you know there is a speed camera in the area (given the amount of signages present) you should be paying enough attention to slow down and not get caught.

If you're going that fast and unable to pick up a sign that says speed camera 24 hours >100m away. Then obviously you're going too fast.

And I hate when people use the defense "OH but we're too busy monitoring our speed, taking our eyes off the road" or "I should be looking at the road and not the signs" Firstly if it's on a flat surface you have no excuse, you should have the experience to estimate your speed to within 5k/h. You could argue the government allows 10ks given lower penalty. If you are unfamiliar with the road to actually KNOW where the speed camera is. You shouldn't be speeding in the first place no matter how well the conditions are.

And secondly, if you cannot pick up a simple sign. What chance have you got about picking up a kid that can run out behind a car?

If it's a camera downhill. I'd say it's a revenue raiser when there is no potential danger. I.e there is no hotspot/blackspots for car crash incidences.

Moral of the my rant? If you know where the speed camera is and if you get caught then you're a **** idiot. If you don't know where the speed camera is. You shouldn't be speeding because obviously you've never driven that road before and don't know the conditions. just because it seems similar to x doesn't mean you can go the same speed.

Note: Don't get me started on the new safety cameras in NSW. No signage a head telling people that there is a speed camera a head. The road I normally go to get to uni, I see it go off atleast 3 times a day. I won't get started though. I need sleep
