Thinking of buying a Subaru

Unread postby mini15michael » 12 Oct 10, 8:32 am

Ok found this Subaru down the road from me
Carpoint
When talking to the guy he said he wants rid of it quickly, so might be able to get him down to 6,000. Also he said he has spent $2,500 on getting it up to scratch, which included a new clutch.
Only problem I have with it is the amount of k's it has done, anyone on here have some advice on older Subaru's?

Oh and I will be upgrading from a '97 Mazda 323 which I am trying to sell.

Have a look at this, mate:

http://redbook.com.au/used-cars/details ... 96FF0880D1

He's asking more than market value for it. It'd wanna be in immaculate condition for that price, but the amount of K's on it would turn me off.

For that amount of KMs, not worth it.

You'll more then likely have to replace the engine soon or just suffer through a lot of problems.

The $2,500 he's spent getting it up to scratch would be things that just keep going wrong with it due to how much work it's done in its lifetime.

I'd say find out why he's getting rid of it if you can, but he's obviously just trying to sell off this car because he's forking out $2,500 every few months to fix it ;)

Engine's probably got about another 50K in it, after that its 'drive it into the ground' time. Its not worth that kind of money anyway.

Ok.
He said he is selling it for his sister who just got divorced and wants the car gone. And it has been sitting on the nature strip of his house for atleast 3 months without moving.
But from everyones experience Subaru motors don't go much past 300K without troubles?
Thanks for the info, helps me look for something else.

Still want rid of the crappy 323 though...

From my experience, no. Boxer engines are very expensive to work on also, especially if they have higher k's

How much you wanting to spend figuring that your car will net you 3-4.5k?

Hoping to get a little bit more for the 323 since it has only 140K on it. But I have been looking around the $6,000 mark for a new car, which isn't leaving me much.

My main problem at the moment is that the 323 only has one baby seat support spot, and it is in the middle. So slightly annoying to get a baby in an out of. And with an expanding family, we want 2 cars that can take 2 children under 3.

Edit: And by the way, our first family car is a 00 model BMW 318i. So an inexpensive second car to fix is a must.

Have you tried a small hatch like a Focus or a Golf?

Yeah starting to look that direction, only problem I can see is boot space. Need a good size boot for a prams, but having never looked at either I can't comment on how big they are, just what they look like from outside.

I know the feeling about prams - I have 6 month old twins.

Maybe a Civic sedan VTI or something they seem roomy.

So you want a cheap car that's inexpensive to fix, has a big boot and room for two babies??

Buy a commodore/falcon. On gas if you want it even cheapr to run.

Didn't realise this was a difficult equasion.

^^I don't think OP had been thinking about big cars.

but basically inz is right. get a large car: commodore/falcon/camry/altise/magna/similar

if you're going cheap end and older car i reckon camry, despite being a bland drive, should be realiable.

Yeah didn't want a car that big... Looking more a small to mid size car, not a fan of larger sedans...
Also hate the look of most commodores and falcons...

Looking at the civics or even accords, or trying to find a decent PT Cruiser for something completely different, don't think they are cheap enough though...
