Fallout 3 New Vegas stability?

Unread postby DontShoot » 21 Oct 10, 3:06 pm

Hi all,

I played Fallout 3 goty ed and found it to be very unstable. Every time i would sit back and relax the game would drop me back to desktop. Sometimes at critic areas the game would crash evey few secounds (think the escape pipe). THis meant I would load, run save, crash, load game, run, save crash, load game, run save crash.

From what I read this was a very common issue with the game and could not be rectified due to the problem being in the engine. So my question, this is aimed at people who suffered the same issues I did. Do these bugs exists in Fallout New Vages?

I've had no problems with New Vegas yet. Also had little to no problems with Fallout 3 GOTY.

I had a lot of issues last night, I then updated all the drivers on my machine including sound drivers and haven't had a problem since, so I would recommend to give that a go with Fo3 before buying NV, as I used to have the same issues with FO3 too, and from memory I fixed it the same way. :D.

I had a few issues, but these were not common. I crashed when I was coming from a small shack near Novac going near the first hostages. I switched from Night to Day and it was fine!

Other than that, no problems yet.

Goodsprings wasn't that annoying in terms of bugs. Aside from items falling through the ground when I tried to pick them up, I just shrugged it off and assumed I'll get them elsewhere. No spinning heads, no crouchhopping, seemed okay.

After leaving Goodsprings, I lost any kind of stability and order. I'll open a locker, 360 would freeze. I'll try and maintain clothing or weapons, either the game would freeze or worse, the items I was trying to merge would disappear, I'll try and switch weapons, the 360 would freeze. It pretty much turned into Fallout: Bugged Vegas with any input from my controller causing the 360 to freeze up.

Not a happy camper at all. I'm not sure if it sends a message, but I refuse to wait for patching. As much as I love Fallout, this is going straight back to EB in the morning for a refund. I have other things I can spend my money on and get enjoyment out of without waiting for patches just to get some resemblence of playability.

It's bloody depressing, I tell you what.

Apparently, the stretch of road that leads from Goodsprings to Primm is notoriously bugged (this is where I'm experiencing problems). Hell, one person is saying looking at the skyline is causing the game to freeze, this isn't switching a weapon where things have to load or trying to access a locker where it has to generate items... simply looking at something is causing a crash. What. The. ****?

Ive only had 2 crashes with 10 hours of total play (which for a game of this scale, i have no problem with). I have no repeatable or constant errors/problems so far. But thats the thing with Fallout 3 and New Vegas it seems that there are people that just have millions of proplems, errors etc. Then there are those (like me) who run into a very minute amount of issues.

Plus you'll find there is a fair bit of loading and processing when you 'look around'.

No crashes so far and i'm past Primm, getting some stuttering at some points but i think that's more to do with my computer more than anything else. Probably helps that the graphics setting's i'm using are rather mediocre.

I've had a couple of minor issues however steam seems to have fixed them.

1. My auto save wasn't working properly, I would go in and out of buildings and it would say its saving but not actually save it seemed to be stuck on this one point in goodsprings.

2. Random crashing combined with the above and me forgetting to manually save gets frustrating.

Thankfully though when I turned the pc on this arvo steam downloaded something for it and both those issues appear to have been fixed.

I'm a long time fan of the Fallout series, but after Fallout 3 I'm wary about trying this one for the PC. :(

Depending what your pc specs are if your machine is nice and powerful or old, If its powerful you shouldn't have any problems if its an older beast I'de definitely get it on one of the consoles.

I'm hearing a lot of negatives from the xbox version but none for the ps3.

A large majority of the people complaining about pc problems are trying to run it on crappy pc's lol and they want to just blame the game not there hardware.

I still get a random crash here and there but I don't think its the games fault its more got something to do with the latest Catalyst drivers which I have been having problems with other games as well.
