I think the most important thing is work out setting, story, basic characters, et cetera.
Fantasy has been DONE. Modern is difficult because there is simply so much stuff (computers, laptops, phones, tablets, cars, bikes, weapons, toys, massive population, electronic stuff, computer stuff, building stuff, stuff and stuff). Science fiction is hard to do right (and will just lead to red-hair themed Mass Effect text based RPG anyway ). Historical is more difficult because the ended has already occurred. Apocalypse has been done very well and very badly and there is not a lot that have successfully done in-between.
At the end of the day there are pros and cons all over this shizznizz.
Or we could just create a lunar flight simulator …
