DarkBasic Pro is now free!

Unread postby Papai » 3 Nov 09, 12:31 am

Well this is it fellow rapid prototypers... Darkbasic is free. They say this is an 'ad' version though - so you'll get ads whenever you compile, I suppose. But who cares? You're never going to make full games with it anyway! Darkbasic is free!!!

I haven't tried that link because I have the paid version... But visit the Game creators website if it doesn't work. Darkbasic is free!

 Interesting timing, but still the ads will be annoying. Never really looked into dark basic. Would you recommend it to someone who knows nothing about C, C++, Visual Basic etc. I know a little bit about Javascript but that is all.

I do recommend darkbasic to anyone who hasn't done any programming before.

Without knowing any of the technical details, I CAN tell you it's based on a similar idea to Unity. The two are designed to handle the same sort of stuff. Overall, Unity is more flexible but darkbasic is easier to get the hang of.

If you're REALLY new, I'd say go darkbasic (its free, afterall) but if you've got some little experience, then maybe check out unity for some better results. Essentially though, they're both just for rapid prototyping.

Ooh, C4 would be good, I used it a little bit (no license so couldn't do much). That would be good .

Unity is only multiplatform IF you make multiplatform games. The question is, would you really bother? I mean personally, would you realistically be able to or have the drive to make multiplatform games? If you're only doing prototype work or have pretty much no experience, darkbasic is KING!!!

And I can just see The Meadow stepping in about now to remind me of how much I hated darkbasic back in the learning days.

The help files are actually really quite good (especially if you update the editor) and the forums have been going strong and are really a good community to help out people or search for your questions.
