Just finished the game earlier as my Barb. Thought the story was very predictable for most part and very cliche but there were some areas where Blizzard went another direction which I still enjoyed such as:
- Tyreal rejoining the council but as a mortal... I thought there would have been a climax of some sort where Tyreal sacrifices himself but in doing so, is spared death by once again becoming the higher being that Angels are
- Imperius not being able to do battle with Diablo when Diablo reaches the crystal arch and our hero having to finish the job. From the 'Wrath' anime short, I thought Imperius could have ended up being lost to his wrathful ways and being corrupted as one of the lords representing the seven deadly sins and being enslaved to Azmodan.
Cut scenes were well done as always. I was probably more satisfied with the Lore and NPC banter embedded in the game.
Unless I missed them, I'm a bit disappointed that there were no references to the Paladin, Sorceress, Amazon, Druid or Assassin from D2. The Necromancer one was in plain sight if you got the 'not dying' Necromancer quest in Act 2. I think there was a reference in Act 3 to the Barbarian in D2 (though it could have been a reference to one of the Ancients... not sure).
So where now for an expansion? I guess remaining questions are:
- What became of Leah and will she be herself again?
- What of Adria?
- What of the black soul stone?
- Will Malthael make a return?
Since the D3 story ended a fair bit more cleanly compared to how Diablo 2 originally ended, I really don't think a one Act expansion will be sufficient. Hopefully, Blizzard will give us a fully fledged story like they did with Starcraft BroodWars and what they're doing with Heart of the Swarm as well.
Not sure what new classes they can add to the mix if they intend to do so. I thought the 5 classes in D3 more or less took the core essence of the 7 classes in D2 and perfected it (with the exception of mass summoning but we all know that's not viable in higher difficulties in D3).
