Did you enjoy the story for Diablo 3? (Spoilers)

Unread postby Mugsy » 10 Jun 12, 10:59 pm

Just finished the game earlier as my Barb. Thought the story was very predictable for most part and very cliche but there were some areas where Blizzard went another direction which I still enjoyed such as:

- Tyreal rejoining the council but as a mortal... I thought there would have been a climax of some sort where Tyreal sacrifices himself but in doing so, is spared death by once again becoming the higher being that Angels are
- Imperius not being able to do battle with Diablo when Diablo reaches the crystal arch and our hero having to finish the job. From the 'Wrath' anime short, I thought Imperius could have ended up being lost to his wrathful ways and being corrupted as one of the lords representing the seven deadly sins and being enslaved to Azmodan.

Cut scenes were well done as always. I was probably more satisfied with the Lore and NPC banter embedded in the game.

Unless I missed them, I'm a bit disappointed that there were no references to the Paladin, Sorceress, Amazon, Druid or Assassin from D2. The Necromancer one was in plain sight if you got the 'not dying' Necromancer quest in Act 2. I think there was a reference in Act 3 to the Barbarian in D2 (though it could have been a reference to one of the Ancients... not sure).

So where now for an expansion? I guess remaining questions are:

- What became of Leah and will she be herself again?
- What of Adria?
- What of the black soul stone?
- Will Malthael make a return?

Since the D3 story ended a fair bit more cleanly compared to how Diablo 2 originally ended, I really don't think a one Act expansion will be sufficient. Hopefully, Blizzard will give us a fully fledged story like they did with Starcraft BroodWars and what they're doing with Heart of the Swarm as well.

Not sure what new classes they can add to the mix if they intend to do so. I thought the 5 classes in D3 more or less took the core essence of the 7 classes in D2 and perfected it (with the exception of mass summoning but we all know that's not viable in higher difficulties in D3).

I was under the impression that diablo/leah fell from the heavens into nothing (where tyreal was for 20 years)

the black soul stone was destroyed when diablo became leah?

I enjoyed it, I haven't seen any references either, kinda sucks.

Nope, watch the final cutscene and you see the black soul stone appear as Diablo disintegrates, falling into the clouds.

Dialogue with my WD character and Covetous Shen in Act IV:

Shen: Do you think that Leah is lost forever?
Witch Doctor: Diablo consumed her. She is gone.

What of Adria?

What of the black soul stone?

Possible comeback in DLC?

I enjoyed the story, even if it was predictable at times. The whole child-Emperor actually-being Belial was sooooooo obvious. I loved the Act 2 cinematic between Imperius and Tyrael. So dramatic and I loved the character designs.

The only disappointment for me was the use of in-game cutscene to depict the death of Cain. He was such a pivotal character and the only one to appear in all three games (apart from Diablo), and thought he deserved a proper cinematic to show his death (even though I know that's not the game's 'style').

The assassin is referenced in a demon hunter set named after Natalya fro mthe Kurast Docks.

I thought the story was pretty poor on the whole. Belial-child is up their with ME3's starbrat as a bad character.

it did the job.... just. 51/100

certainly doesn't seem like they spent alot of time on it.

as someone pointed out on the forums, you're going up against the Lord of Lies, who can't lie for ****, and the Lord of Sin, supposedly an expert at strategy, yet he does 5/5 of **** all.

Yeah, the child emperor being Belial was so obvious. Hell, even the hero guessed it.

This was simply from the point of the hero. There was also a lot of chit chat about whether Leah's soul was strong enough to survive as well. I guess we'll need to wait to see where Blizzard decides to go with this.

It was very freaky hearing a male voice and seeing quite a feminine frame on this Diablo. A bit bonier as well while the previous incarnations showed a very muscular physique.

In terms of an expansion, from my knowledge, Inarius is still being tortured in Hell and Maltheus abstained from voting to wipe out the Nephalem and disappeared when the World Stone was destroyed. Lilith is also still out there (despite appearing as a reskinned Andariel in a random dungeon in Diablo 2 LOD). I have a feeling that Blizzard may go with a Frozen Throne type of plot - say with Inarius and Lilith in a race to find the black soul stone and Maltheus being the one who is now in possession of it and trying to hide it from all parties.

My impression....
‎"Hi, I'm Azmodan, hells greatest tactician. Thought you should know I'm going to attack you from Arreat, see you there."

"Hi, Azmodan again. I'm currently sending guys into your cellar, hope you don't notice."

"Azmodan checking in. Just letting you know that I don't really need sin hearts anyway."

This sort of thing really annoyed me. The bad guys were hollywood bad guys, not supreme evils of hell. Things like the "Orders from" Belial and Azmodan were incredibly lame.

The overall story idea was great, the voice actors were good (especially Chen, or "Poh's Dad from Kung Fu Panda as he is to me") but the in game writing was pretty terrible.

I wish the Blizzard cinematic team would make a movie however. They were purrdy.

To which Shen replies something along the lines of when you have seen as much as he has you can never be sure. I'd say we see Leah again.

Adria is going to have to be a future boss.

I only saw the Necro too.

Storyline 60/100 - far too many holes. Although I enjoyed parts of it.

He did indeed! I remember that line.

Does anyone remember one of the prophecies the Brother who heals you in New Tristram saying about evil being overcomed by a woman preordained or something? I do think we'll see Leah again.

And the fact that the Stranger was Tyreal was so bloody obvious... the game managed to keep the suspense and mystery of the falling star up until that point.

I know what happened to the barbarian from Diablo 2.

You're playing him.

Seriously, listen to his conversations with his companions, and he alludes to it several times. The fact he is bloody old goes along with it too - its definitely the same guy. He's got his hair down, not up, but its the same guy. Even has the same build and stance.

I don't mind the lack of references to the D2 heroes in D3. The Diablo story continuity isn't that good as it is. Aiden was retroactively introduced as Leoric's son when it was never referenced in Diablo 1, and the rogue and mage were reduced to bit parts in D2, even if you killed Diablo with them in D1.

I thought Blizzard stated in various interviews that this was a different Barbarian?

They might say that, but he says otherwise. It's not directly said, but I'm sure he makes some statements (particularly to the enchantress) which all but confirm it.
