TF2 won't display but process appears in Task Manager

I double click on TF2 in Steam to launch the game, I get the usual "preparing to launch" dialog box but then nothing happens.

Steam shows me as in game and the TF2 process appears in Task Manager but I don't see a game display at all.

Currently attempting to verify my game files but it's going to take forever to do.

Tried killing the hl2.exe process in task manager and relaunching but that didn't work. In fact, it ended up causing more problems since Steam thought it was still running (which meant I couldn't verify my game files or exit Steam normally).

Mine had similar after doing fresh W7 install.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure I ever fixed it... My usual fix is to close steam, rename clientregistry.blob and force it to recreate it. Another way would be to delete a handful of key files from the TF2 directory and force the download/repair option.

Seems to rotate between "Game is currently unavailable" and the problem noted in OP. Now I'm fresh out of ideas.

EDIT: Tried deleting clientregistry.blob too. No success.

Now Steam is telling me "Servers are too busy" when I try to reinstall TF2.

I feel like I'm bashing my head against a brick wall.

I don't have any filters on at all. Too bad I'm normally asleep at 3-4am.

EDIT: Restarted Steam (had to anyway to opt into a client beta) and it's now downloading.

EDIT 2: Tried reinstalling again after getting "Game is currently unavailable" but still getting the issue in OP.

EDIT 3: Just tried to launch DODS and It's having the same issues too. Seems like something in the engine is screwed up.
