Can someone answer this guys query, 'cos I'm getting the same thing.

I can start the game no problem, I can view servers no problem.. I just can't join any.

if you have Vista and an X-Fi soundcard, with 5.1 speakers you may be getting the problem of sound only coming out of the middle speaker or only 2.1? This seems to have occured with the latest patch by valve, a fix will no doubt be available soon, but until then to get 5.1 ultilised type these commands into the console:

snd_legacy_surround 1

snd_restart

that should get the sound working, also if you have a sound that gets stuck, use the second command to reset the sound and put it back to normal

I have had the same problem but only on well. I found going into audio options and changing my sound output to headphones and then back to 5.1 fixes the problem.

edit - I run winXP and and an Audigy 2 zs sound card

Since formatting, I'm getting an odd lag in TF2.
Ping is fine but its almost like the game is trying to overcompensate for ping. People rubber band around / stutter, weapon effects don't come from the weapon, rockets lag / freeze.

running latest graphics drivers, tried reinstalling LAN and chipset, yet its still going. omg halp plaz?

played around with a lot of random things and the issue has been sorted.... just kinda wish I knew what the problem was for future reference.

Everyone in our clan has had the issue you've described, it seemed to be more of a random server network thing. You'd just get rubberbanded around for no reason. Didn't seem to matter what settings/drivers you changed. It was like the server had timed out your cilent and refused to send it updates or something.

From memory on the steam forums like a month ago...

Some mod there mentioned they had new netcode in the game. Which to me can help explain why sometimes you die, and then a second or two later the enemy comes around the corner >_>

I'm off to try and find the post, but it did mention something about lag compensation being drastically changed in the game

My problem is the game minimizes every single time it loads a map. It eventually loads if I alt tab back but its a pain in the ****.

Are you running full screen or in a window? If you provide a little background people could suggest a work around...

I had bad stutter and basically same problem described above, and yet had good pings (around 30 - 40)
in the end it was fixed by rolling back my graphics driver. (I was using the latest nVidia one) Ive rolled back to Forceware 162.18.
See if that helps.

I also had problems with the one released around xmas, however the latest one (169.21) solved most of my issues.

I'm running full screen but the same thing happens in windowed mode, I can see the window lose focus.

I just formatted and installed nothing but drivers/tf2 and its still happening. Have tried with/without vsync.

Even when I first load and just click options it minimises.
