No Message Received

Unread postby UHAX » 13 May 12, 5:59 pm

Recently (over the past 2 - 3 months) both Arma 2 Servers on GON have been crashing more than normal, most users see the 'No Message Received' error display on screen then get the 90 second disconnection counter that the server never recovers from. When this happens we can still talk in game, so I do not think this is a connectivity problem or a problem with the available bandwidth, I suspect that the server is under load. It happens frequently in both Benny and Wasp editions of Warfare (more so in Wasp), I don't think the server can take the increased number of players and overall load and the game is taking too long to respond. Many of us have noticed that this message will appear when a large town is spawned and the match has been running for a few hours.

From what I have been told both Arma 2 Servers are running as a Virtual Servers on a single piece of dedicated hardware, can you please disable Server 2 and allocate the resources (memory, bandwidth and available cores to server 1), we can test over the next few weeks to see if this improves the situation. At the moment it is pointless having two servers going as most Warfare games crash (about half of them).

If you agree with the above statements can you please post a message below so we can get some feedback to GON.

We all know that the GON servers crash like clockwork when playing BE or WASP(why the **** are you playing WASP). Best advice I've got to give is turn off as many of the unnecessary features of BE as you can and hope for the best. Try limiting the use of mods to TGW ect.

He was winding you up UTAX because most people are playing DayZ.

80% at least.

It's bad, there's no denying it. I like the idea of removing server 2 and giving it's resources to server 1. ArmA is probably the most resource hungry game out there, maybe it just needs a little extra love from the internode/GON staff? :P

Question: Are server 1 and server 2 even on the same box?
8-)

Yes I know about turning on or off the features, but the problem seems to be getting worse regardless of parameters, I think it needs a little TLC, if the servers are on the same box; all I am asking is that we disable one of them and give the resources to the other one and test. If they are not on the same box then not much can be done. I had been told that they were on the same box, that's why I posted the thread.

The problem has gotten worse over the past few months because we have more people playing. We have seen a spike in the number of new players. It’s not just DayZ that is getting more popular.

If after a month we see no improvement then we can turn the 2nd server back on.

Ah UHAX, you must be new here. Allow me to introduce myself, I am FryzieDelta: player of the ArmA, OFP and VBS series' for the last 6 years and former assistant organiser and once or twice commander of the GON ArmA II coop nights.

My post was intended as a joke (hence the :P ) due to my being disenchanted with Warfare.

Also, the rank of 1337 p0st3r isn't of my choice, it's a standard GON rank for someone who has passed a certain number of posts. If I had my choice of rank it would probably be "self proclaimed former assistant organiser and once or twice commander of the GON ArmA II coops nights", but it doesn't fit.

I would rather server 2 not be demolished as I am intending on ressurecting said GON ArmA II coop nights in the near future, and that requires 2 servers due to one having all the noobs who play warfare and the other having pro's on the night who generally be awesome, and the noobs would be most upset if I asked the admins to boot them to make way for the impending awesomeness on the night.

But something should be done, it's been getting much worse lately on both servers.
Games never get to end, and it's more than 50% more like 80 to 90 %.
btw it happens with just 3 or 4 players as well.

I agree with UHAX this would be a good test as to the cause for it. If the crashing stops then we no its a load issue and it can stay as 1 running server.

Hi FryzieDelta,

The coop nights sound good, but I don’t think it will work if you have two Virtual Servers on one bit of hardware.

Currently it is not possible to run two Warfare games on both servers at the same time (well you can but it will fail after an hour or so into the match), both of them become very laggy and unresponsive, again one of the reasons I think it is a resource issue.

In a Virtual environment you would dedicate the maximum amount of resources that can be used by each VMachine, if VMServer 1 is not in use then VMServer 2 can use all of the CPU time available (but not RAM so it needs to be pre allocated), if both servers are in use then the system will split the cycles so each get the same number of ticks (provided that you have configured the servers with a 50/50 ratio), the problem is RAM and CPU cycles, I seriously doubt that you will be able to run your coop games on Server 2 if there are 20 something people on Server 1. They will both lag out and / or crash.

I am up for some coop nights, but we need to fix the server first. It would seem like a better idea to get one server working rather than having two broken system that constantly crash.

and the match has been running for a few hours.

Ding ding ding. We have a winner.

Warfare matches used to be fun when they were over in about 2.5 hours. None of this homo 6-8 hour epicly long **** we see today.

Are the server overlords even looking at it? The games don't even get to the 6 hour mark anymore.

We have only just been told this is a problem, but yes we are looking for any potential problems. FYI the last time Windows was restarted was on the 10th at 3am for updates, so it's probably the ARMA 2 software itself. I'll continue looking around.
