Do you have any of the ai mods? If keeping formation is an issue tell them to "disengage" and they'll stick to the formation much more. If you astop at a point telling them to stop manually or take cover can help too.

yeah i have zues mod, i usually just set them to engage at will, hold fire when im on the move, and open fire when i contact enemy, ill try disengage, dont think ive tried that one before.

That's your big problem right there Dude, you're setting your men to Engage at will which allows the AI to break formation to engage a target. By default this is off and should only be used when you're not going to be personally leading your troops into the fray. By having it off the AI will stick next to you at all times.
